Fishing charter help

The wife wants to book me a fishing charter for my birthday, which may be the best birthday present yet. Would be looking at early to mid April. I’m not sure what is biting where that time of year. I have only done some inshore fishing in my boat that time of year & have never really had much luck. I would kind of like to go out of Murrells Inlet, Georgetown, or Little River. I would want to target fish for eating not just sport, any advice???
Inshore.
Will anything be biting that time of year worth doing an inshore trip?
Any recommendations on guides?
Near Shore.
Never done any near shore fishing, anything biting & okay to keep then?
Any recommendations on guides?
Offshore.
I know the fishing starts to pick up then but I also think some of the target fish are out of season then too? I have done good during the summer months in the past offshore but just hate that long ride out & back from the Gulf stream. Also a trip out to the Gulf is a lot more expensive.
Any recommendations on guides?
Any help would be greatly appreciated….

If you wait until May, grouper will be open offshore.

April is prime time offshore and inshore fishing. Sheeps at the jetties, flounder, red drum, black drum.

Offshore-Dolphin, Tuna, Wahoo, groupers(May).

Thanks scdriver. Any opinions on good guides in that area?

Captn Jay Fishful Thinking is who I would suggest in Murrells Inlet area

2006 Pro Line 17 Sport Honda 90

Appreciate the help, might look him up.

The “Heidenseek” charters is a good choice. Eric Heiden is the captain and provides both inshore and offshore charters with two different boats. He fishes out of Georgetown Marina and catches fish year round. I don’t have his number but you can visit the Heidenseek website. He lives in Pawleys Island. I’m sure the Georgetown Marina can provide a reference. There are many good guides fishing out of Georgetown. I encounter them frequently while fishing and they all seem to be decent people. Georgetown fishing can be awesome this time of the year. Redfish, blackdrum, and trout in the creeks; sheepshead and blackdrum at the jetties; good bottom fishing off shore. Eric Heiden excels at offshore bottom fishing and is reasonably priced. Good luck.

That guy hates spearfishing even tried to get it banned in SC once. I wouldn't do business with him if it saved my life. Some people think all of the fish belong to them.

I don’t like to hear the idea of REASONABLY priced, that usually means they’re undercutting others. I hope thats not the case.

Interesting take. I’m not a charter captain/guide so this is a real (not sarcastic) question…Is there a “standardized pricing structure” among guides/charters? Unless there is some “regulation” stating everyone must charge the same price, I can see the issue, but if there isn’t, shouldn’t it be up to the guide as to what they decide to charge? Or is this one of those “unwritten rules?” As a consumer, pricing competitions typically favors the customer. Granted, I believe there is a “you get what you pay for” aspect to this situation but again, unless there is some sort of regulated pricing, it should be up to the gui

I have been a member of Charleston Fishing for several years and have very few posts for the very reason you see here. Someone asked for assistance and that is all that was provided and was not meant to stir up any controversy. I do not know what Capt. Heiden’s views are on any fishing subject, I just know that he has a reputation around Georgetown as being good at bottomfishing. As far as reasonably priced, I do not know what other charters cost so I did not mean it as a comparison. He told me one time what he would charge me for an offshore trip and it just sounded reasonable to me. Have a nice day everyone.

I could see your point if a particular boat was able to undercut others because they are able to operate cheaper due to not having the proper licence, insurance or any other fees that may be required to legally charge people for a charter.

Other than that, it’s a free market.

I’m sure most of us like to find gas stations that are “undercutting” the others.
