Fishing from a 13' whaler

I know a few of you run a 13’ boston whaler.
How do you like it for around here? I’m thinking of getting one.

Do you ever take it in the grass on a flood tide?

Do you have a trolling motor? Bow or stern mount?

What motor? The one I’m looking at has an E’rude 25 2 stroke.
I have a 40 E’rude tiller. Is it worth the extra weight to have the extra power? Approx. 75lbs.

Would you prefer a tiller over a side console or vice versa?

Thanks

>> LOVE IT

>> Yes. Floats in 6" and very light ie you can get out and pull it if you get stuck and easy to pole

>> Yes. I made a bow platform that is super stable and strong. Will be happy to share the plans. I’ve made a second one for a friend.

>> I have a 25 Merc 4 stroke. With just me it goes 32 mph. Thats fast enough for me. A 25 2 stroke would be perfect.

>> Mines a tiller. I love the tiller.

>> I rearranged mine to have a back casting deck and removed the middle bench to make the layout more like a flats boat. For now I have just mocked it up with plywood but my plan is to do it up right by reusing the teak benches as the rear deck. Also in the plans is a poling platform in the future. Downside of these boats is rough water will slow you down and beat you hard. Its super stable but mine is the old tri hull so its a bone shaker. No worries, just hug the shoreline when the wind comes up. On a flat, the tri hull will slap if pointed into the waves. Easy solution is to point stern into waves. If you are gonna get one, make sure to weigh it before you purchase, because one with soaked foam isn’t worth anything nor the effort to fix it. Make sure its DRY. Let me know if any other questions.

Thanks

listen to him.

I want add one small thing. The beauty of a tiny skiff IMO is its simplicity and nimbleness. I put a bunch of stuff on my small skiff. the poling platform is now off. so is the depth finder. you really only need a few basic things to catch lots of inshore fish

You gave the advice against a poling platform in the past. I did listen. Still listening. Might not opt for it based on your ■■■■■■■■. Could spare the $500 too.

I had one with the side console, fishing alone it was good but with another person in the boat it was crowded. Add a tacklebox, a few rods, cooler for fish and a bag for phone and other gear and the boat was a trip hazard. I rearranged it the best I could but it was still crowded. Other than that I loved the boat and hated to get rid of it.

I had a quick detachable trolling motor mount on the front and a merc 40 on it too btw.

Thanks all,

That’s exactly the kind of review I was looking for.

I’m buying sight unseen as it’s an outa state boat. Obviously I can walk away. I found it on ebay and didn’t expect to win. But for $1000+gas, it’s hard to lose.

First off. Its not a “13 foot boat”. It carries up to twice the load of others. Unsinkable. Vessel doesn’t pound you… and designed by a legend. (B.D.) BW…EW…Everglades (not a bad resume) The buoyancy is sweet etc. There isn’t many other 13 footers alive today. The teak on the ss is nautical and timeless. The gell coats are some of the best. I lost one 3 weeks ago in a bidding war and I havefound another but the owners in love… this lady is trying to tell me the four stroke is soooo much better…blah blah… and she has no clue what the difference is. I like 2 strokes on 40 hp and down. I found one 13 ss (30 2s yam)and made and offer as well as an offer on a Montauk. I love my 22 cc Edgewater, not too big to fish alone, pricey offshore alone. I need people to go offshore with. I like to fish and then fish more…work when I have to. LOL
