Fishing Gear Opinions

I am looking to replace my trolling rods and reels. I used to run tld 25’s on some boaters world trolling rods. Trying to decide between the tld 30 and tld 50. I really wan to run 50 pound test line. I have absolutely no idea about the rods. Any recomendation on a rod and reel setup? I fish for wahoo mahi and tuna but I have hooked the occasional marlin (white and blue) and sail and I would like to have a chance. My tld 25’s seemed to have a long fight with an average fish and any real big fish was a joke. Never had any issues with the reels so I felt they were good quality.

Sorry, I do ont have any opinions, but do you have interest in selling your 25s?

TLD 30’s don’t really hold that much more line than the 25’s. The 50’s are a very popular choice. Sails and whites are going to be more fun on the TLD 25’s though.

They were fun. Watching the spool empty holds a special place in my heart as it broke lol! I already sold them but thanks!

50’s are to big for South Carolina to FL. I fish all 30’s and that covers me even with Tuna fishing in New Orleans and NC. A standup rod with roller tips would be good. I think they may a 30-50lb standup rod. I also have a set of 7’ kingfish rods with 30 Toriums that is much lighter. I run 30lb line on everything. Many days I feel my setups are to heavy though…

I also have a 50 and have never really strained it. I hope to change that some day.

Get half 30s and half 50s.

Have you thought about upgrading your handles on the 25s. The new handles make a great improvement.

Get 50 TLD LRS and be done with it. These reels have a ton of line capacity and you’ll never have to buy another reel. You can always find deals on THT and Craigslit for combos and that’s where I would be looking. This will be more reel than you’ll need for 90% of the fish you catch, but the occasional monster you’ll want the additional line capacity.

You are not gonna want to fish with all 50’s out of Charleston unless you are targeting blues…25’s/30’s with a few 50’s would probably be your best bet.

50 TLD LRS is a great choice. Much easier to handle/hook fish with the graphite frame and it’s not like you’re gonna need to put a ton of heat on the fish around here (lot of drag could crack the frame).

I agree with SC diver. Get some 30’s and some 50’s. Shimano TLDs would be my recommendation. When you’re trying to put some meat in the boat during dolphin season, a few 50’s are real nice especially when you have multiple hookups with 20+ lb fish. They also work well when running big lures, in-line planers, or high-speed trolling for wahoo. The 30’s will work for the other stuff. And you’ll have plenty of line capacity in the event of the larger fish (which always hits the smallest rod in the spread). If you’re going with mono, I would recommend putting 30lb (or 40lb) on the 30s and 50lb on the 50s with a good length double-line using a bimini twist.

Thanks for all the advice. I decided to go with 4 50’s with all rollers and 3 30’s with rollers at the tip and stripper. Should be a pretty good setup.
