Fishing gear recommendations

Hi Guys,
New to the site and salt water fishing. looking for gear recommendations with around a $1000.00 budget for rods and reels just to get started. What’s the best bang for the buck? I am in the HHI/Beaufort area so I am thinking I will start learning to bottom fish and troll. Some out at the HH reef and Betsy Ross areas. I did go with some friends and catch Cobia in the Port Royal sound many years ago. So will defindently do that agin when they come inshore. Also if you have any suggestions on lures I should begin to stock up on ,must haves and don’t leave the dock without these? I have fished fresh water for the past 40 years and looking forward to my saltwater adventures. Thanks in advance for helping me spend my money.

I don’t know what type of rush your in but if you put up a similar ad up in swap shop and if you are patient I’m sure you will be giving some good options. There’s plenty of people on hear with to much gear or wanting to update/grade as well as people that would love to help you in the right direction. I think one of your better options would to be to aim for something like 4 senators or tld combos in the smaller sizes and they could be double purposed, bottom fishing and trolling, and then get 2 decent spinning rods. Your likely looking at like 6 combos but personally from my experience I would rather have 6 quality over 8 decent rods. Also being that your starting 4 rods is a good spread to start trolling with. This is just an idea of what I would think of doing if I was in your situation.

PM sent.

Penn Battle 3000 II with a Ugly Stick GX2 rod, load up w/ 20# braid. Tie up 18" Flourocarbon leader using triple surgeon knot or back-to-back Uni Knot… fish for hours and give em a fresh water rinse. Good luck!

A battle 3000 is not what you want for trolling or bottom fishing. Start out with some senators. They can be found very cheap and will do everything you need until you decide to upgrade.

Cant go wrong with senators or tlds. For starting out, i would recommend senators. Great for bottom fishing and also decent for trolling. Tlds would be better if you were mostly going to troll in my opinion. Agree with killingr. A battle 3000 with 20lb is not what you want for real bottom fishing and although it would make nearshore reefs black bass very sporting, if anything worthwhile bites it, you are toast. A battle 3000 may also be good for nearshore sheeps,

I’ve got a whole family of Senators I would sell. Also 1 Okuma Diezel.
I have a pair of 4/0 and I think 5 or 6 6/0 Senators. All the 6/0 reels were spooled last year with new 40# high vis and were never used after that.
Some are on rods, some are not. Most of the rods are Penn rods of various weight and length.
Nothing fancy, but would be willing to make you a package deal if you tell me what you really want.
PM me if you’re interested.
Good luck with your search.

Thanks everyone for all the advice and offers on many pm’s. I think I have most of the gear I need to get me started of course I blew my budget. I pickup a few penn international’s for trolling, a couple penn 975’s, pair of 3000 Stadics and 6000 spheros. Went by Haddrells for the first time very helpful staff bought a few leaders and such. So I am just lurking and learning and beginning to pickup some must haves for the tackle box.
Thanks
Ray
