Fishing in Columbia SC

USC student looking for a place to get a line wet to take some stress off during exams. Any suggestions?

I’ve had some fun fun in the past fishing the Saluda for trout. Little inline spinners and a light spinning rod are all you need.

Ditto Fishguy. I fished for trout there during my college days back in the triassic period. Caught them on canned corn threaded onto bream hooks. I have since switched to the fly rod for trout, so don’t overlook that option. Check out the TU chapter in Cola. Take some heavier tackle and try for stripers, bucktails used to work for me. Be VERY aware of rising water in the Saluda. Now is a good time to fish the Saluda because there aren’t any planned water releases from the dam, so says the SCEG website.
Catch your limit and fry them up.

When I was a student back in the 60’s, I use to wade the Congaree River and catch rockfish right near USC.

All of the above. The Congaree is a little more accessible than the Saluda, especially if you are footbound. The Congaree has multiple places you can walk in for stripers, smallmouth or catfish. Just be careful of rising water. You can be placed on a call list thru SCE&G website. They will notify you by phone of rising water. Also be careful of the Broad. There is no warning for it and it can come up very fast also.

Ah! Thanks guys! Looking forward to trying things out

You could also check out the SCDNR website. Look under the “fish” heading. They have a county by county list of their public fishing areas. Also, try posting on the Midlands Striper club’s website. Ask if any of them are going out and have room for a co-angler who could help with expenses, as in gas or bait. They are a great bunch of guys and a family oriented club. I hope to have myself and a boat in shape for fishing during the summer. PM me if you are in the area during summer and want to try for white perch or largemouth.
