Fishing in Venice w/ MGFC 2-20-12 & 2-21-12

Had some people asking how our trip went and unfortunatley I have been so slammed catching up with work I have had little time to download pics and resize etc. Here is what I got now.

We did the Venice thing last week and had a blast. In terms of Yellowfin we landed 2 over 100#, a 65#, 52# and 45# plus a few smaller ones. We landed too many blackfins and Kings to keep count and had a 400# Mako hooked that did a dance and a tail whipped and broke the mono behind the 900# cable with his tail. It was a lot of fun. First time I’ve ever done the chunking thing so that was new to me but I could get use to it I don’t even want to think about the monster we lost. My buddy fought one for an hour and 45 minutes Tuesday that we got to the side of the boat and the circle hook came out of his mouth while two of us were waiting with gaffs it was a quiet ride home. Fish was absolutely over 180# and I’m sick thinking what it actually was. It would make you all sick to know how many blackfins we tossed back that we would have been smiling from ear to ear to keep here. We caught so many the first day we decided to throw them all back on day 2 [:0]

If you want to do Venice I would highly suggest contacting Scott Sullivan with MGFC. Look them up on the web. Now it’s time to get my boat ready and down to G’town for the spring:smiley:

Here is a picture of me with a 111# YFT I caught. I’ve had lots of
Sashimi and seared tuna since last Monday

This one was over 100# after the Mako had his way with him. I had to gaff him and pull him away from the Mako and into the boat and the Capt. immediately had a Mako rig in his mouth and had him hooked.

This is why you go

Looks great. Ya’ll get the mako back to the boat?

That’s some serious fishing right there! Dang, that’s a lot of sushi :sunglasses: Great report.

We are fishing with Kevin Beech with MGFC

Good post, awesome pictures. How far did y’all have to run to get to the fishing grounds?

I think anyone who likes to offshore fish should definitely go fish Venice. It’s a great time. We ran about 25 miles out of the river and 25 miles out through the gulf. Pretty easy stuff compared to what we are accustomed to. It was very nice being on the 39 Sea Vee on day 1. The bouy read 4.3 ft on 6 sec but there was some snottier stuff than that heading out with some pretty good rollers. The Sea Vee knocked it down well and I was impressed. Day 2 was about 2’ (like a pond on the Sea Vee) and we ran 48 MPH all the way out and in. I saw a little faster on the speedo at 1 point but won’t rat Scott out:smiley:.

Dandaman - If you don’t want to catch sharks make sure you tell them you could care less. I’ve never seen people get so excited over a Mako…we would have just assumed culled them and kept fishing for yellowfin but those guys got all excited when a mako comes into the picture. I will say that after watching one jump and spin for awhile it is pretty impressive what they can do.

COOL pictures! Glad you boys caught them! Hope we can do the same!

Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!

Wish I brought the boat back down there this year. You will come back here and think the fishing sucks now. Incredible place…
