Was wondering who keeps records/journal of each fishing trip they take weather it be inshore or offshore?
I have been thinking about doing this for awhile and was wondering how to set it up the most efficient way possible? Should I have two separate books (one for inshore and one for offshore). Just want to make it as easy as possible so when I go back to look at conditions for that day compared to the weather of the day I am fishing.
Let me know what you guys think?
a million different ways. classic journal style is the way i started.
i think a TideLog is a great way to do it, since you can simply draw an arrow to the time of day/tide/lunar cycle that corresponds, then write in temp, location, catch, weather, etc… very quick for making field notes to transfer later too…
… but i also like the idea of having a 365 day calendar to write multiple years’ observations on (to get a quick idea of what’s going on at a certain time of year). Da Moons started me on this- he keeps his tide charts with fishing trip info recorded on them. all hung up next to each other in the shed, it’s easy to review.
of course the purpose of all this is as a personal almanac, so arrange it carefully with attention to how you’ll want to look for information in the future.
Ditto on the tidelog. I have them dating back to 2001 and have little notes here and there through out the years.

thanks for your answers
think i’m going to start the tidelog before the next trip
my old tide logs provide me a ton of info. I just add alot of info around every day i fish. This year I started keeping track of the weather everyday on my log wether I fish those days or not.
excel spreadsheet… make your own columns etc, tides, bait water temp etc…been doing it since 1995
I was considering making an app (Andriod) for that. Basically, you would just enter bait used, fish caught, weather info, etc. The app would use the gps in your phone to record time/date, and location info. Then later you could bring up the locations on a map (such a google maps).
Would anyone use something like this?
I like classic journal style. It takes a little longer to log your trip in a narritive form but it’s much more intresting when you go back to review it. I have been doing this some over the past ten years and it’s cool to look back over (in a spiral binder). My neighbor gave me a true log book as a gift when I got my new boat so I’ve been pretty good about recording my trips since this.

I keep mine on a bound calendar with the moon phases on it. Keep the info simple such as who, where, what time, tide, etc. and any interesting notes. I’ve kept it since 2008, and it’s cool to look back at every year and see when you have caught fish. I also keep track of when good reports come in.
