fishing last weekend

Ok…so we did fish last weekend…both days. One day I waaaayyy overdressed…the next day the stono river threw cold and rain on me as I was under-dressed. Dang weather man…

Still finding some shrimp around…caught plenty of bait on high tide sunday. Saturday we put over at Wappoo. dropped my minnow trap with a busted crab from my freezer in it and within 10 minutes…no lie…had half trap of the biggest fatest minnows ive seen in a long time. proof is in the pics below. Trout bite was awesome…redfish not so much. lots of stingrays…and donnie caught one of the thickest ones ive ever seen Sunday. nasty looking thing…all red on his belly and was spitting at us the whole time. Was a day for the birds…and saw lots of cool ones including 11 kingfishers…one of my favorites. Saw some friends on the water…which is always great. this week has been a rough one at work…so im looking forward to some days off…14 of them to be exact…and Im sure that somewhere in there I’ll find time to toss a line or two… heres a few pics…most…non fishing…but kinda neat stuf I saw on the water.

lots of small bait still around

love me some dock fishing…

…and so does someone else:angry:

Very nice Penny! That was a mutant minnow. I find this time of year to be challenging as far as what to wear. Danged if you do, danged if you don’t. Better to over-dressed I guess.

Today you would be best to wear…a sail ;). I’d say 75% of the minnows caught were that size! Minnows on steroid!

Penny, I dearly love your Mclellanville, and have played there as much as possible for fifty years. Being one who fishes artificials almost entirely, I was intrigued by your success catching large mud minnows in the Stono. Can you suggest the type of place and how I could do that at Mcl. Also, the tide and time it normally takes, since I have to drive in for a few hours’ fishing. Also, I’m not seeing the small schools of finger mullet. Any Suggestions there? Further, I would love to buy crabs from your father when he’s crabbing. Is that possible?

I catch my mud minnows I the mouth of drains and around rocks/oysters. Daddy use to…and still does put me out on a oyster bank that may have a "hole of water or drain, left behind it. Perfect p,ace for minnows! I’d toss a trap with a busted crab… Or part of a bologna sandwich. I it  into the hole. Scurry back to the boat…fish a few minutes and retrieve trap. Always caught them that way… Usually off of little bridges across marsh and drains too. I caught those right there at line hose ramp…toss the trap…back Donnie down in the boat…park truck…let Roo pee…haha…and grab trap. There’s a drain runs to the left and right of the ramp parking lot…and I dn mind sharing this cause if y’all catch them all up…I have other places. One thing…if you don’t use them up…return them to the pace you got them from  …or give them to someone gong out. Daddy sells his crabs to Dave fender…oysters to Rutledge at Carolina seafood. They’ve been good to him…so he stays faithful to them. His brother Steve sells crabs tough…let me know when the time comes and I will try to hook you up with him. Mullet are still there…look for them in the shallower parts of the bay…like in muddy bay itself where all the mudd flats are visible with creeks around them. Minnows don’t take long to catch if they are there…like I said. Pools behind oyster rocks are great…or toss the trap right in front. Take a stick with ya to tie it to. If none in 10 minutes or so…move. Baits of choice for me… Crab…can of sardines with lid pulled back…hot dog or Vienna Weiners, cat food or smashed bread… In that order. :). Now…pm me who you really are…and I t will be a secret
