Fishing license mayhem with the State.

OK, add my name to the list of people having difficulty with getting a license this year.

Several of y’all have mentioned that you haven’t gotten your license in the mail. One of my coworkers, and his fishing buddy, both were faced with skipping their weekend trip this weekend because of the same problem. I told them just to get a $5 temporary permit online or at Wal-Mart, just to get on the water.

Well, today I tried to renew mine online so I could take my son out this afternoon.

Couldn’t. Kept getting an error message. Online service would not work. Wal-Mart couldn’t get it to work (after waiting in line for 30 minutes @#$%!()#&^~@#$!!!).

Tried the call-in service. Still didn’t work.

So there you have it. I had my son all jacked up about fishing, had the tackle ready. I don’t personally have access to any private ponds, so basically I was screwed. Had to explain to a 5-year old why we can’t fish because of a problem with getting a license.

Poor kid just didn’t understand, and the thing is, I had no good way of explaining it. After a few minutes, I finally told him “Son, it doesn’t make sense to you, and it doesn’t seem right, because it doesn’t make sense and it’s not right”

Also explained to him that I was not about to break the law by going fishing. The licenses exist for a good reason (funding the DNR, which is mostly a trustworthy organization it seems).

So, went and bought ourselves a couple of legit baseball gloves and taught him how to play catch. Believe it or not, this is the first baseball glove I’ve ever owned.

Yes, but if they use a computer system, it won’t work. My DL#, SSN, and user number have some sort of error. It’s apparently something biffed with my own account/identity in their system.

I’ve never so much as had a warning from the DNR for anything, and it’s been nearly 10 years since I’ve had any sort of legal action (a traffic violation), so I know they don’t have me locked down for any legal stupidity.

Probably more to do with everybody and their brother all trying to get a licence at the same time. The system was swamped today, it will get better.

That might be the case. I know the two couples in line in front of me at Wal-Mart got saltwater licenses, and theirs went through just fine. When I got to the counter, their computer gave them the same message I got on my computer at home. And when i called in to their call service, same crap.

Maybe I’ll try again tomorrow.

Just hire a guide and you wouldn’t need a license. . There are 458 of them in the Charleston area alone now.

Ok (sliding soap box out)
If this government org is having so much trouble and just can’t get it done then either give an exemption until they can get straight or turn it over to a private firm who can handle it both efficiently and at a greatly reduced cost. If you miss days because they can’t get it together because of (insert reason), do you get a pro rated cost of a license? Credit toward next year? These are honorable and dignified way to handle to stewardship and responsibilities we have entrusted this part of the government with.

I bought mine online on friday with no problems? I made a mistake on my address, called them up and they straightened it right out in less than a minute. You can also hit up your local offices, but I’m sure they’d be backed up this time of year.

Bought my sportsman license June 17 online. Got it in 3 day now it was not valid till 01 July, but still had my old one till the time expired. They say early bird get the worm!

I don’t need a guide to take a 5 year old fishing for whiting in a jon boat, although I do share your sentiment regarding other forms of fishing. If I were looking to boat some bull reds, larger sharks, or whatever offshore, then I wholeheartedly agree.

I can pay for quite a few guide trips every year, have more fun, catch more fish, and spend less money than I would if I owned my own boat with the same capabilities.

Had no problem getting mine Sat. morning around 6 am.

I have found the best way to deal with the license issue is to turn 64 years old. After you accomplish that you never have to buy one again!

Hope this helps.

ZX

bought mine on line on june 29th. no problem. got my paper license in the mail the next week. will be 64 in august so i may not have to have one for next year. still will need to get shrimp permit. duck stamps, saltwater and hunting i guess. not sure about the age limit on those.

You can also fish off the piers without a license!! For future reference

I ordered my fresh and saltwater license online I think around July 3-4. last week in the mail I received two DNR mailings. One envelope contained my fresh and salt license along with the usual DNR sticker.

The second envelope contained another saltwater license for me and another shiny new DNR sticker. I know I didn’t order it twice, nor was I charged for the extra license.

Something ain’t right over there at Fort Johnson!

on a side note, anyone with DNR license problems want to buy my extra license? bidding starts at $100 and there is a reserve on it! :stuck_out_tongue:

I received the same exact thing, two licenses…and I’ll sell mine for $95…

Ordered mine on the 3rd online and still haven’t received it in the mail.

For the last couple years I’ve been getting duplicate licences. I just keep one in the wallet and one in my drybox just in case.

The duration of the license is no longer tied to the states fiscal year, meaning if you buy a license in May or August that is the “start date”. Also, you can get a three year license. My wife got her’s online July 2 or 3, printed it out, and then the official one came the following week.
