I have a license. My wife and daughter do not. Can I fish out of my boat in saltwater using two rods total without fear of them getting ticketed? What is the rule relative to this situation?
Thanks,
Homey

That’s a perty GREY zone…would be up to the DNR person that checks you…Rule of thumb is each person in boat fishing has to have a license = 1 rod per person…??
I’m tired of being told that I have to “spread the wealth” to people who don’t have my work ethic. I’m tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy to earn it. I think I’m going fishing…!!
as long as they aren’t touching the rod they’re good. As soon as they pick it up or operate it, they’re fishing.
It’s up to the officer. There is the means for 2 to fish. For $10 I would not chance it.

I called Dnr in Columbia on that several years ago and was told as long as my wife wasn’t touching the rod it was fine for her to not have a license. She even went as far as telling me that if someone wrote me a ticket to call back. It may have changed since then though. Still for 10 bucks we always buy the license regardless. She doesnt care to fish much but she was in the boat with me yesterday and we started catching fish and she ended up out fishing me. Worth every penny of 10 bucks to both us.

Watch out for “Pops” he must have got the name from “popping” people with tickets. I know for a fact he wrote a citation for a flounder 1/2" over legal size.
I’d get a license and be done with it.
Seriously, why take the chance on someone waking on the wrong side of the bed and based on no direct evidence that your wife must have been fishing, write you a ticket, sieze your boat, trailer, car and first born, all because you didn’t spend 10 dollar?
Just a thought.

What Gator, Doc and even the dern Yankee above said. Really, its $10.00 for the year. Plus if they both have licenses whether they are fishing or not, that’ll let you up the keep total for the boat. Sort of cheap way to bring a bigger bag limit home.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I got my wife a 3 year fishing license, fresh and salt just so I don’t have to leave my rods home. Almost every time out with her, we get stopped and checked and he wants to see both licenses. I think when they see me with all the rods on the boat and her riding along they figure we’re easy pickins. I can’t remember the last time I got stopped when I was out with just a guy on the boat.
