I’m from the state’s piedmont and may not be completely accurate about the area I’m describing but I recall there’s half length of an old bridge left for fishermen after a new bridge was completed across Broad River in Beaufort County. I think the road is number is 170. My question has to do with whether or not you need a saltwater fishing license to fish from the bridge. I have my lifetime senior licensing but will be joining some friends on Hilton Head who are pretty tight with their money and may not want to fork over money for a license. Do they need one to fish from the bridge?
Yes. Shore fishermen need licenses nowadays.
Sorry, I could not resist…

Is anybody on Hilton Head really too poor to buy a fishing license? How much do they spend on golf?

From the SCDNR website:
"Senior Lifetime License
A person who has been a resident of SC for 180 days or longer and has reached the age of 64 may apply for a Lifetime License for $9.00. The license is valid for Freshwater Fishing, Freshwater Set Hook, Saltwater Fishing State Hunting, Big Game, WMA and Migratory Waterfowl.
Lifetime Licenses are available through the mail or in person at DNR offices in Columbia, Charleston, Clemson, Florence and York. An application is available here."

Thanks for your input.
As an aside, there is a small community of relatively very-not-rich people that live on Hilton head… Gullah folks that have lived their whole lives there. Anyhow, regardless of whether they are retirees or not, it’s a pretty small sum to pay.
Please have your friends buy a license if they plan to fish, it’s not worth the risk. I’ve seen someone get busted fishing from shore without one before.
