Fishing on a Big Red Bote

Went out on the maiden fishing voyage for Capt Steve’s head boat with a few infamous charlestonfishing characters. A prolific poster, an Antarctic air trafficker, a commercial fisher extraordinaire, some dude looking for a swordfish in 100ft, and some sweet water groomsfellas from inland that are going to be in my wedding. Anyhow, it was a good cherry popping for the boat and I can really say I am glad to have a head boat back in Charleston. It is not a huge boat, but just right for 20ish folks. The biggest plus is the owner. Anyone who has any experience with Capt Steve Little knows what a pleasure he is to work with and how hard he works to provide great service. Not to mention the great crew he leads (Capt Hamilton did an excellent job at the helm). Once this venture gets to rolling full steam it is going to be a great asset to Charleston.

On to the report. The fishing was decent but the grouper seemed to have lock jaw. The first place we dropped line produced a basketful of bsb and pinkies. After picking through them for a while we took off for new bottom and found similar at the next spot. Just could not get on the grouper. The sounder was lit up with red arches. The amberjacks started to show up in large schools with a few cobia mixed in here and there. Never could get a cobia to eat through the AJs, but the sweet water boys from the inland had a blast wrasslin’ reef donkeys. Jerms even got one to eat a fly on a 10 wt (check out the report in the flyfishing section). After messing with them a while and all the sweet water fishermen complained about having sore arms we decicded to try another spot a bit shallower. In shallower water we still could not buy a grouper bite. Everything else was cooperating even the “threatened” ARS. We picked up a fair number of triggers, bsb, b-liners, and pinkies there along with 3 nice rare ARS chickens. All in all a great day to be on the water and a great time with friends.

Special thanks to sellsfish for helping coach some of the newbs and for pu

I think the coolers reproduced on the ride out…think I told them to bring 5…ended up with about 15
The bote is loaded with dive tank holders, as it was a dive bote in florida.

This boat is well suited for diving. If I am correct, that is what purpose it served in its prior life. Giant deck on the back that is low to the water to make for easy in and out.

What is the boat name or how can we research once up and running full steam? (guessing that it’s still in the works) I’ll definitely book a trip…Better than having to clean the boat when I get home!

I want to thank Capt Steve, Capt Hamilton, Sellsfish, and Duckcommander for a great first offshore trip. I may not have gotten that swordfish but I will. It took me a year to get that first Red! May need to fish a little bit deeper…maybe 200ft. Looking forward to seeing all these guys again and getting back out there.

Reelman, don’t worry you will be sure to know.

As a tourist lurker, I am psyched that there may still be a headboat day for me on my vacation in late June. Good job Capt. Steve.

The fella on the left side of the back row in the white t-shirt was just involved in a serious motorcycle accident. He is in critical condition at Grady Hospital in Atlanta. He is one of my best friends, my hunting partner, and my groomsman. Please pray for his recovery. I am believing that he will pull through, but he has a huge mountain to climb. Your prayers are appreciated.
