Hi all,
What a great forum! I am relativley new to SC, I moved to Columbia from Colorado in the fall. I was hoping somebody could reccomend a place to fly fish for reds in the charleston area on Saturday. When I look a map I get a bit overwhelmed. I am a life long fly fishermen and have worked in the industry for years but have extremly limited experience on the Atlantic Coast. In fact I have only caught one redfish on a fly in the Beufort area. I will be fishing from my kayak. If anybody has any reccomendations for places to put in, tides or times of day, or flies I would greatly appreciate it. I have spent most of my fishing time in SC fishing for smallmouths up here and have not made it to the coast as much as I would have liked. I understand if you don’t want to give up your secret spots, but any info would be great.
Cheers,
Matt
Post this in the kayak section as well. May get a few more responses.
Cannot help you much with the Charleston area for red’s…i generally fish the georgetown area. BUT…
i am going to colorado in August to do some trout fishing. Flying in to Denver, but really don’t know where we are going to go from that point…got any pointers?
Hi Finnaddict,
There are endless places to fish in CO it depends on what kind of fishing you want to do and how far you want to drive from Denver. I guided for years on the front range mostly on the South Platte, big thompson, and in Rocky mountain National Park. All can be good, the SP has a good population of large trout in all sections but they can be frustratingly hard to catch esspesially if the water is low. Still it would be worth a trip into Cheesman Canyon for a day (about one hour from denver) Otherwise I would reccomend driving a bit and checking out the Roaring Fork, the Frying Pan, and the Colorado on the Western Slope in the Aspen area(3 hours from Denver)Good fishing on the Eagle and on a number of other small streams. If you want to drive further, the Gunnison is one of my favorite trout streams in the world and I lived in MT for years. Also endless high mountain lakes that you backpack to and catch as many beautiful dumb cutthrouts as you want. If you get a general idea of where you may want to go let me know I will get back to you with more detailed suggestions.
Cheers,
Matt
