What a great forum! I am relativley new to SC, I moved to Columbia from Colorado in the fall. I was hoping somebody could reccomend a place to fly fish for reds in the charleston area on Saturday. When I look a map I get a bit overwhelmed. I am a life long fly fishermen and have worked in the industry for years but have extremly limited experience on the Atlantic Coast. In fact I have only caught one redfish on a fly in the Beufort area. I will be fishing from my kayak. If anybody has any reccomendations for places to put in, tides or times of day, or flies I would greatly appreciate it. I have spent most of my fishing time in SC fishing for smallmouths up here and have not made it to the coast as much as I would have liked. I understand if you don’t want to give up your secret spots, but any info would be great.
Cheers,
Matt
Matt,
Saturdays tides are High 5:16am, Low 11:32, High 6:06pm. I don’t fly fish, as yet, but there are some knowledgeable guys that can give you pointers. I might be getting out on Saturday, probably know on Thurs., I’ll keep you posted. I’m sure other guys are going out this weekend, do you have just Sat., or Sun. AM as well?

Jimmy Buffett can have Margaritaville, I’m going to Redfishville!
Not sure if I can fish the ville this weekend but if you have a good selection of Clousers ( all colors but olive and white and dark colors seem to work good for the trout…), copperheads, shrimp patterns, some SMALL shrimp patterns, the reds seem to be gorging on the tiny grass shrimp right now, and some crab patterns you should be alright… I do suggest stopping by the Charleston Angler to see Mad Mike and pick up a few of his Mad Mikes Mud Minnow, or as I call it the M4 If you will fishing the grass make sure you have some weight to your flies or they may not get down in the water becasue of the grass… now of course this coems form the guy who has yet to land a fish OTF in salt water but I have schooled by the best around here in HOW to do it…I just can’t seem to get it all together
Thanks for the information. I hear the time to fish is during the flood tide. DO you reccomend getting out there at low tide and fishing the incoming tide? Charleston Angler has been reccomended by many, I will check it out on Saturday and definately pick up some Mud Minnows. Thanks again,
Matt
Hey Matt! I’m pretty new with this whole kayak fishing in saltwater thing as well. However, this Sat I will be making my first attempt in the saltwater. Hopefully, it will be productive. If not, then that’s cool…I’d rather be out in my yak on a nice day then anywhere else. I don’t fly fish, but I do plan on putting in at Copahee to try and catch some reds and nice trout. I’ll be coming down from the Cola area as well. Let me know when you plan on getting down to Chas and we can maybe learn the ropes and the area and find something to catch.
Tuesday Morning we put in at almost dead low… prepare for a nice long walk through the mud dragging your boat… start dragging and when you see the water you’ll be able to get in… be careful the mud gets about knee deep right near the water and it will suck off your sandals if you don’t snug them down… once you get to the water you’ll find a decent channel that is 15" to 5 feet deep follow it out and pick a creek to fish til the water rises… once it rises you’ll be able to get around the oyster bars and work them over… saw LOTS of lady fish and blues and lots of baby sharpnose sharks… we did see a few crusing bonnet heads and a few reds… The Ville is an incredible place to fish and to just paddle around… goo dluck and let us know how it went…
