In laws came in for a week to enjoy what the lowcountry has to offer this week. We were finally blessed with some offshore fishing weather, but it was HOTT. My dad also took some time off this week and we managed to fish every other day for the past week, 2 days offshore, 2 days inshore with the goal of feeding the family while they were here on vacation.
We were pretty successful i suppose, but had to work for it. Went to 3 of my favorite spots in 85-100’ on the first day and were absolutely covered up in sharks. Very disappointing, but managed to work through it. We then went to another spot i hadnt been to in at least a year and loaded up on vermillions with a few triggers, porgies, and bsb mixed in. Nothing fancy, but definitely put meat on the table.
Second day, we really wanted to put some grouper in the boat and headed out with six inch pogies, hoping that would be the ticket. Had one grouper gulp a live menhaden and head straight down into a rock… Never got him back out of it though had another bite on a live vermillion that was very suspicious for grouper that ended in a straightened hook. After once again meeting the vermillion limit, we headed out to deeper water i hadnt fished before and trolled around to beat the heat and find some bottom spots. Nothing on the troll, and never really escaped the heat.
Marked some small spots and was pleasantly surprised with my boat’s first scamp! Would also like to add we caught some mondo-sized (up to 34") out-of-season fish that were successfully vented and released with sequalizer. I was really impressed with how easy it was to use. I would imagine it greatly reduces release mortality.
Bite was a little slow so we went ahead and called it to dance in the rain later
