Fishing Report 12/16

Took a day with yet another rough start … Had to get the kids to school so that set us back an hour … 3/4’s of the way there I realized that I forgot both of our nets (bait and catch) so I stopped at Captain’s Choice and bought 2 more nets … grrrrrrrrrrrr …

I get to Barstow and back the boat down to the water … dead battery … AGAIN … Again, I drag out the jumper cables and jump off the boat and this time I yank the fuses for the radio and the amp - done with those 2 - again, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr …

So now, by the time I get the boat in the water it’s after 10am … so I’ve missed the better part of the morning bite …

I pull around right there at the ramp to get my bearings and dial in the new Lowrance …

NOTE: Anyone who knows us knows our old FF was the functional equivalent of using divining rods to find fish … I got a deal on an Elite 5 DSI and I’m working a deal on a 10" Garmin … My plan is to use the Garmin primarily for chartplotting and basic sonar and use the Lowrance for the Down Imaging … and since it looks like I’ll be able to score BOTH units for a TOTAL under $500 I’m not going to complain one little bit …

Now where was I … oh yeah, Barstow … looped the mouth twice and picked up 2 keepers 23 & 24.5 and had a couple pull downs …

Pulled up and went around the corner to Spring Creek and pulled around there a couple of times … the first time we’ve fished that area and found no bait in the creek … We did manage to pull in a couple more - one of which I lost at the boat because I was too lazy to get the net and tried to pick him up over the side - my bad - nice fish with a shiny new piercing in the top of his mouth - enjoy …

Pulled up again and went down to #4 and pulled around there … again zero bait in the area … by now it was getting late so we pulled up and went back to Barstow and pulled around in there one more time … Pulled in 2 more 25.5 and 26.5 … We really didn’t expect to catch the last two, but we had the bai

How deep were you fishing? The cone probably wasn’t very wide if you were in relatively shallow water. In shallow water you have to be almost directly over the fish to see them. Also, the boat may be spooking the stripers in shallower water. They may be moving away before the cone gets over them.

Well … in there (Barstow) it is all [now] less than 15’ … usually running right at 10 or so … Spring Creek is a little deeper at the mouth … say around 15’ going back to 7 or so in the back … #4 was the same way …

I forgot about the fact that the cone runs … what … 20’ wide for every 10’ down … guess I need to run her in deeper water to try and “see” what’s down there … LOL

it’s my Wife’s fault we HAVE to fish now!!!
