Fishing Report 4/21/2014

Okay … long weekend but had family in town so we missed the MSC TX …

I did manage to take Monday off and go fishing with Liz and it typical April fashion it was looooottttttsssss of fishing with sporadic catching ending in mass chaos …

We got a late start because we had to send the kids off to school … so we missed the early morning bite …

Bait was in short supply … Ned’s was closed and David was blocked off so I called JC’s and they said they only had about 8dz left but that they looked good … Went by there and looked in the tanks and while there was some small there were also some decent sized herring in the bunch …

Went inside and paid for 4dz and we’re talking - apparently everyone was having bait issues - moon, rain, cold, etc - affected everyone - he did say that the reports were Sunday night Herring catching was back to normal …

While there wasn’t much to choose from he gave me what he had which was more than enough to carry us through the day and still have left overs to put in the home tank …

So we head out … the original plan was to head up river but due to time and bait location we went out of Koon and headed over to Bear…

Short story … Bear = 0 … As in no marks and no bites … So we pulled up and started heading back out … As we were cruising around we noticed some bird activity around Bomb so we trolled around till we marked a few fish and dropped planers out … While we marked fish at Bomb couldn’t get them to bite on planers…

We did notice one school on the far side of Bomb and tried to troll over to them while pulling the spread but they were so sporadic and random that it was hard to keep up …

About that time we started getting bombarded by the Ospreys … At several times we had as many as 4 overhead and it was all we could do to keep them off the larger baits…

We did manage to get close enough to pickup one of the schooling Striper which ended up measuring in at just over 26" …

I managed to splice together a video .

Great report and video. I am gonna give it a go this weekend. From the reports I have been getting from friends and this forum you can catch them any way you please right now if you can find the fish! Also a friend of mine was finding some fish monday and had trouble getting them to bite with freelines, he rigged up some DR’s and trolled slow enough to keep them under the boat and bingo it worked they caught some nice fish. I don’t know if they just started biting when he did it or if it was the presentation? These fish were about 20 to 25 foot deep.

Nice report, Rick. Thanks for the additional info CF.
That was interesting, the starter clash making the Striper erupt… I’ve heard of weird sounds making fish start biting (i.e. drumming) but that’s a new one to me.
I wouldn’t recommend doing it on a regular basis though!
