Fishing Report (Nightmare) 12/01

wow… I cant believe you hadn’t noticed any difference up to the point of failure… like vibration or slight over revving. Did you possibly hit something? Either way, Cheap and Easy fix. If you don’t feel like messing with it, try the boys at the Prop Shop on Lucas Street off 378 in W Cola. I have always found them to be real fair. 803-791-1175.

Lawcrusher-I have to say that write up was hilarious. in a “I know what you mean/I’ve been there kinda way”. My most recent trip was like that. Planned on fishing 2 days and running all the fuel out of that boat for the winter. Get to the ramp at dark and boat won’t stay running. Luckily I never cut her loose from the trailer. Been there- done that before. Lost a day of fishing making boat repairs. Now I’m ready to fish the last day, but no one was selling bait on the water. Travel by truck to get bait. Finally get on the water, had a decent day fishing then decide to pack it in. Fire up the big motor-get on plane and fuel gauge not budging. Uh-oh. Remember-I was intentionally trying to run out all the gas in this boat for the winter. Well I did- about 3 miles from the ramp with darkness upon us and temps dropping fast. Fortunately I had plenty of batteries for the TM, but being proactive, I had dumped my bait and now I couldn’t even put out the planer boards! Decided to call it a “romantic cruise” while the GF bundled up in everything she could find. She probably was calling it something else- but she’s sweet and doesn’t say anything- not out loud anyway. At least the trailer load was smooth- until the tilt decided not to work lifting the motor. Removing the fill plug on the hydraulic unit took care of that issue (guess it was air-locked) but not without some serious teeth gritting and cussing/mumbling going on. To sum it up- I caught fish, so it was still a GOOD day on the water. I always tell new boat owners: If you have a day in your boat where something, even a little thing, doesn’t break or act funny, consider yourself lucky! And if you catch fish on that day- you’ve had a GREAT day on the water.

To be honest, I never noticed anything different in the way she ran. There were no vibrations until the last time, which was when he shut her off for good. Of course I drive a '99 Durango, and things slowly go out that I don’t notice until someone else gets in the truck, and it could have been the same way with the boat. Grateful it will be an easy fix so we can get her back out on the water again. As for the transducer, when I get the boat on the trailer and Rick gets her hooked up, I have a system which includes shutting off the engine and the FF, and pulling up the engine, so doubtful that it was left on. But anything is possible, and will just have to upgrade asap.

It is all about the fishing and yes, even with everything that happened, we were still able to put the kids on fish and 11 is really not a bad day.

And have to say I am glad it is not just us who has these types of days.

Happy fishing everyone! If the weather cooperates, we will be back out Sunday!!!

Prop is fixable. They just put in another hub. How do I know this? I spun three props on one offshore fishing trip. Yes…I said three! The first one 10 miles offshore, the second one 30 miles out, and the third one on the way back in about 20 miles from shore.

Your transducer melt down is what happens when you have it left on and out of the water. They will get hot as heck and melt. Seen that one before to.

Trailer lights…well let’s just say I finally took the sledge hammer approach, and rewired the trailer from front to back.

As for the rest of your adventure…well sir…well done!

On a side note…daughter coming in late would have worried the crap out of me, and kid that broke the pole would have so gone swimming. :imp:

Oh yeah…them white boats are a ***** to keep red mud out of…

(One of these days I will tell you guys about losing my hydraulic steering 60 miles offshore…with my Mom and Dad on the boat!)

@Dave … Yeah, I’ve already got a call into Lucas to fix the prop tomorrow … also just ordered a new one with the hub already pressed in off of Amazon for $100 …

The trailer is getting a complete rewiring job on Saturday … it’s been long overdue anyway … I’ll likely just take it to Koons and tie the boat off and do it in the parking lot … I don’t have lake access anywhere else to just leave my boat so I can repair the trailer in my driveway …

As for our daughter, I can say she was at the mercy of someone’s else driving and at least she was keeping in contact with us via cell phone - it was more of an aggravation than anything else … I could have simply locked her out and gone to sleep …

Fishing poles can be replaced - RJ wasn’t very pleased that his pole was snapped, but I can say he took it better than Liz would have had it been one of her poles

Gotta ask though … how on God’s Green Earth did you spin THREE hubs in the same trip? I understand spinning the hub once, but you had to be waaaaay overloaded to spin it TWO more times after that …

Since I’ve had a chance to think about it all, we were definitely overloaded on Sunday when compared to how we normally run … In hindsight I think my “fishing” limit is 4 on that boat - especially now that I’ve added another “person” in the form of a 225lbs+ livewell (24 gallons at 8lbs per gallon = 192lbs + dry tank weight of 36lbs = 228lbs) … granted RJ only weighs 65lbs but add 2 females (200lbs … maybe) + 3 guys (at least 450lbs) and I’ve got over 1,000lbs of “people” weight … plus a “dry” weight of 1,900lbs and another couple hundred pounds of gear and I’m right at my max capacity for our boat … THEN ADD GAS … sooooooooooooooooooooooo I can (now) understand how and why I spun our hub … LOL

Guess that also explains why - for the 1st time ever - we would occasionally take on water when everyone was in the back of the boat … So I guess I have to know my “limits” and keep in mind that our kids are

When you rewire your trailer, do not use the garbage wire that comes with the kit. use an old, orange extension cord. Heavier gauge wire and it is in a protective sleeve. The insulation on the thin wire will rub off wherever it rubs on the trailer. I also like to use the liquid electrical tape with regular electrical tape on top.

Use the below website to order quality wire. They good fast and cheap. I know…I know…you are supposed to get only two out of the three, but these folks are all three.

Buy the LED sealed lights and use the chemical heat shrink butt connectors. I used 16 gage tinned wire for my runs from the back to the front. I dip my boat in the salt from time to time, and the tinned wire is the only thing that will stand the test of time. Plus I hate doing something twice, because I did not do it right the first time.

To hook to the vehicle I like the Jetconnx stuff. I have have them on all my trailers. Very good stuff!

I typically use outdoor grade (UF) solid copper wire Romex … it’s cheaper than electrical cord and the solid wire makes it easier to mold into shape … It’s also double insulated so water applications are fine … Outdoor grade Romex is designed to be installed in the ground as well as in wet locations … it’s almost .20 cheaper by the foot for 4 wire versus the “marine grade” 3 wire … and I can just go to Home Depot or Lowe’s to get more wire whenever I need to …

My lights are already sealed LED tech with the exception of two of the original running lights that are up by the trailer tongue … so all I planned on changing was the actual wire …

I also use the heat-shrink butt splices for all my connections and then I add liquid electrical tape over the connections … I also use the liquid electrical tape for any thru-holes in the trailer frames just as an added measure of protection …

They must not make a Flotorque kit for that particular prop, because it was the guy at the Prop Shop who introduce me to that solution. The prop itself does need some work with all the wallowing out seen in the pic.

Stopped by the Prop Shop this morning … they make/sell a Flo-Torque kit for my prop … I’ll clean her up this evening and install the hub kit and then sand & paint the old prop … Should be good to go once I’m done …

All of it. I bought it thinking I would put it on my boat, but after sitting in my bedroom for seven months, I guess I’m not. I’m in Lex(as are you I think). Let me know if you want to look at it.

Good deal! After you do your sanding and painting, the install of the kit will be easy. After you get all the melted rubber off the shaft, be sure to apply a thin coat of marine grease before going back together everything. If you have any problems or questions, give a call:smiley:

Prop fixed - Check
New FF Installed - Check
Trailer Wiring fixed - Check

Now all that’s left is the addition of a few more rods & reels and some much needed time off … oh and perhaps a little less precipitation …

Looks like the fair weather fishing might be done for a while. I don’t think we are going to have a warm winter like last year.

Not gonna lie. I hate freezing My tail off being soaked by rain coming from all direction with occasional snow flurry; BUT if you wanna catch a big one be prepared to do so…lol…Most of the bigger fish we have caught were on days most people in their right mind are watching TV in a warm house…ha
