Went out with Sully(and later in the day my son Tommy) on a last minute trip Saturday to see if we could get some fish to bite. No wind for the first time in a while and I had high hopes. To make a long story short, the fish did not cooperate. We checked seven spots from around the elbow up to the little Saluda. Water temps ranged from 37.8-44 degrees. We were all over fish for most of the day but they weren’t interested in feeding on the herring we had. I remember a few years ago when the lake got nearly as cold as it is now and the fish wouldn’t bite very well back then either. We missed several fish and ended up catching only three I believe. The water was less muddy than it has been so hopefully that trend continues. The water should warm up some in the next two weeks. Maybe that will improve the bite some…
I know we always here the fish are gorging themselves and are not actively biting the fisherman’s baits but this past weekend I seen some crazy fat fish. I went out sat from 3-6 and sun from 8-3. Fishing was slow with a Total of 6 keepers and 10 shorts. I marked a TON of fish and covered ALOT of ground to catch these. I am finding most fish when fishing deeper open water. I just had to weigh some of these that are so fat. I had a 18" fish weigh around 5 1/2#. That’s crazy. Big fish yesterday was a 24" fish that weighed just a little over 8#. I fished below the elbow both days…water temp was around 44/45*. Water was pretty clean in some spots and stained in others.

Thanks for the report Chip. We wanted to look in some areas that have produced in the past but were not ideal given the water temp and stain. That’s why it’s important to get out there and fish! The more time you are on the water the better spots you will have at any given time.
I fished Sun 2-5 and caught 5 really fat fish as Chip indicated in his post. Fished gizzards in 6-15 ft of water. Most of the bites came on wieghted FL’s but did have some good blow ups on a boards and corks.

It’s good to see some fishing reports on this forum, I haven’t been fishing since tournament but hopefully will this weekend.
