Fishing the Flats from Fly to Inshore

Posted in both felt it was applicable

Made the trek to my flats, and they didn’t let down. The only thing that let me down was the storm. I was a little late arriving to the flat but before my feet hit the water I saw a tail. Then another, made a few cast and spooked him with my go to fly, “The Simon Special,” as it has been named by a few friends. Saw one more tail and the thunder rolled in. Told the wife lets roll up to another flat close by so we did. Saw some fish before we even parked the truck, hoped out and the cast was a little long for the fly rod (Ken has already told me that he will show me how to cast to them haha). So I picked up the spinning combo and went to throwing the ZMan Minnowz. Ended up counting 4 more tails before I scared them off by hooking up with this guy. Over all great day eventhough I only fished for a total of 30 minutes. Probably head back tomorrow. Maybe the rain will hold out.

Fish On !!

He swam off for the next angler

Overall a great day, we took the spin combo for the wife (I ended up using it) but they recommended the 1/16th oz Trigger Hook, sure worked perfect, thanks guys

Good post and pics, Hurricane. How’d you find your flats? Were you told about them, or did you find them yourself on Google Earth or something like that? Thanks in advance.

Luckily told about them, and connects to about 4, all that flood at different tides so you can fish one, and hop to another and so on

Nice.

I want to learn to search for them myself, but need to know what all to look for…

If you want a flat, that holds fish for something to look at, Mt. Pleasant Pier, but it has had a lot of pressure in the past few years only have seen a couple of tails but usually someone is out there with a fly rod throwing on a flood tide

Nice red Simon, are you fishing the SVC Saltwater Slam?
