I have a 17’ CC with a 70 yamaha, are the jetties do-able an how far out is reasonable. Also what equipment is needed, rod an reel size, rigs, an bait. an what species to target. I am currently fishing for flounder, reds, an trout in the creeks an rivers. Would like to try the jetties if possible. Thanks for any info
What kind of boat is it? The jetties should be easily doable even on a rough day if you know what you are doing. I take my 15 Whaler out there all the time. As far as rigs. I mostly use egg rigs and toss them up near the rocks.
Three-fourths of the Earth’s surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.
It is a palm beach 175
I think its possible if you pick your days. If you can go on a buddy boat because there’s a lot of things that you should learn before you go out there. It also makes a difference what you do in your boat if you fish calm creeks and backwaters then going out to the jetties all of a sudden isn’t the best idea. If you constantly harbor fish or run through chop in the inlet its not as big on an idea. I’ve seen dudes in 14’ Jon boats…
Get some tidal rails!

Fishing is a delusion entirely surrounded by liars in pfgs and buffs.
I go out on my buddies Key West 1720 all the time. We go to the jetties, nearshore reef and a few other places within 6 miles. If it is flat we can run all over the place. If it is rough we get pounded pretty bad and drenched. Going from fun to miserable is pretty easy to do.
We turn around a lot too. Don’t do anything you aren’t comfortable with.
The main things you need to be aware of are obviously the weather, but specifically the wind direction and the stage of tide. I routinely take a 15 ft jon boat out there without too much trouble. Many times I have taken shelter on the outside of the south jetty near dynamite hole. Fishing is pretty good anywhere near there. When conditions permit it, I like to fish the tip of the north jetty. Good redfishing there on outgoing tide. Also used to put kings in the boat just off the end of the jetties, but they don’t seem to hang out there much anymore.
in my opinion if the winds over 10 don’t go. I have a key west 1720 and i went out the other day just fine. If you go by the submerged jetties you’ll get beat, so go where they stick out of the water good and its fine. I fished out there all of the outgoing into the incoming, now the current rips out there so you’ll have to anchor. Now on to the tackle and species, I always use light tackle i.e medium rods with 2500 spinning reels, with 10-30lb braid with 25 lb fluro leader. Gulp shrimp texas rigged with a jig head pitched into the small holes, caught reds, flounder, and ribbon fish last monday. The trip out and back is rough but I’ve seen worse down by deveaux bank, prob 3-4 foot swells the other day no problem. just watch weather and be careful.
