Fishing the jetties

Wanting to try fishing the jetties this week/weekend. I haven’t been out there before and was wondering if its best during an certain tide (incoming or outgoing) or just anytime the water is moving. Also, do you guys typically fish on or near the bottom or all up and down the water table? Trying to target bull reds so guessing heavy rig with but bait is prob best?

Thanks

Go at low so you can see everything. For reds fish the grillage, I wouldn’t recommend dynamite hole to a newbie. Fish big weights on the bottom! Menhaden is best. But good size live finger mullet also works

If you happen to pull one of the big reds up from the deep depths of the grillage don’t forget to “vent” it before you release it or else it will die. I’ve seen people catch reds out there, release them and then watch them float on the top of the water moving with the tide.

Def, I keep a venting tool onboard always just in case. Sucks to see good fish become shark bait.

I don’t even think about venting, it’s just automatic. If I put it back I wanna catch it again, not see it die.

Where is Dynamite Hole out there?

Dynamite hole is the pass through the south jetty where they blasted the rocks so boats can run offshore without running through the jetties

Ok Thanks Yakman

Actually dynamite hole is just that…"Back in the early 1800s, before the construction of the rock jetties that line the outside of the harbor, the shipping channel ran along the south side of the harbor, close to the eastern end of Fort Sumter. The channel was apt to silt in with sand from Sullivans Island on the north side of the harbor, and dynamite was used to keep the channel clear of obstructions, hence, the dynamite hole. Find the edge and you’ll find the fish.

How do you vent a fish?

Good video. I’ve been wondering how to do this properly, now I know.

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.

Great video. How do I find out what fish I should vent?

Three-fourths of the Earth’s surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.

Whatever you release
