Fishing the N. Edisto- a lil of everything

I took my dad and wife fishing today. We had perfect weather all morning.

We decided not to keep any fish today- catch and release only!!

The wife is still green to boating and she did a great job driving the boat. No dock dings, and no bumping the bottom when catching bait!

We went strait from the Dawhoo river landing to toogoodoo creek to catch some bait. The wife loaded up on crabs from a line and dip net, and I caught shrimp from a cast net at the same time. The shrimp were small, but really easy to catch. We landed a nice sized flounder in the cast net, and he was quickly dumped back overboard right from the net. We also snagged a few baby squid (I never caught those before).

We stopped by an inlet near the end of the creek and caught some whiting. I wish I remembered my brim buster! All whiting were released as planned… although my dad couldnt stop talking about how good they taste all fried up.

We rode out to the end of the river to check out the shark action. My dad picked up a small bonnet head (about 1.5 ft), and we released it from the side of the boat.

The water at the ocean side was really rough, and the wife was turning green and pounding dramamine, so we moved back in the pocket.

Lots of reds in 3 ft water! The pocket was loaded with reds. We had to be close to 30 reds in 30 mins, all caught on crabs quarters or shrimp.

We got too shallow, so I got out and pushed the boat off the sand bar and we went on over to botany, where we found more reds! All around slot or smaller. We had to have released at least 45 reds today.

We did have one snag… the only fish not released from outside the boat. One little guy swallowed a circle hook. You can see my dad holding it in the picture. He was bleeding pretty bad, but he was under slot. We released him, where he swam belly up for about 30 seconds. It was not a complete waste though… as he was eaten by a lucky pelican. Hopefully he will spare another fish because he already had lunch… circle of life…

Overall not a ba

Great post and great day. Sorry about the little fella swallowing the hook. Seems it always happens out of slot .

Glad you had such a great day on the water!

Sounds like a great day! Nothing but honeydoos back in the upstate…

I think we saw you getting bait in a small creek off of the Toogoodoo. I believe your boat has a T-Top and we saw you as we passed headed for the mouth of the Toogoodoo to fish the flats. We were in a blue and white Carolina Skiff at the mouth when you went by headed for the ocean. I almost started to head that way and wish I had based on your post. Good day and thanks for sharing!

I think I remember you. Not many boats are out on the creek. We always look out of place with that deep v hull in the marsh. I cant wait to get back out there and do it again.
