New to kayak fishing and to the website. I was wondering if anyone fishes the stono near the wappoo cut area. I live in the area and can drop my kayak in close to the house. Thanks for the ■■■■■■■■ and I look forward to getting out there.
i fish that area pretty much exclusively.
Palmettobum, thanks for the response. Maybe I will see you out there. Would you have any advice on when is the best time of day (tide wise) as well as what I should use in trying to catch some reds or trout. This is a new type of fishing for me. I’ve done most of my fishing in Alaska the last four years and have just moved back to the area. Thanks again.
sure thing, the tide in that part of the river runs about an hour later than the listed harbor tide. I pretty much only fish high tide there, and usually put in before it peaks so I can ride it both ways.
When I first started fishing in the stono, I did a lot of trolling. Right next to the grassline, usually with chartruse, electric chicken, red/gold flake grubs, red quarter ounce jighead. what kind of kayak do you have? If you can, rig up a milk crate with some rod tubes (pvc pipe), bent out to the side a little, and its possible to troll two rods if you can manage it. Good way to figure out where the fish are and what colors are working. I have some favorite spots I usually go to now, but will troll the bank on the way there. i got a near 10 pounder doing that not long ago, surprising since i rarely catch reds on the troll.
Oh yeah make sure you secure that crate good. I thought a bungee cord would hold it, boy was I wrong when huge fish took the grub, and my new shimano combo, as the whole crate flipped on its side. loose drag might have helped too.
so what kind of fishing were you doing in alaska? kayaking? i’m jealous.
you will tear up the trout when it warms up. and will most likely see me out there. the trooper and the palmettobum, ha.
Thanks for all the great information. I have a 13ft Perception. The entire kayak fishing is knew to me. All of my time in Alaska was spent flyfishing for trout and fishing for salmon on the Kenai. I worked on the northslope(oil field worker) for several years and commuted every month back home. Looking forward to being home and doing some fishing. Thanks again for the great advice. Hope to see you on the water.
I have been fishing that area for the last few months as well. To be honest I haven’t had much luck there since it got cold and I mostly stay in Cowburg Creek to avoid the wind. I have managed a few trout but not much else. Do you guys fish in the cut, or the creeks that feed into it? Has your winter luck been as bad as mine?
Oh and F-Trooper, welcome to the area. I moved in a few months back and I put my Kayak in behind my house off the Cowburg Creek area.

it is slow goings everwhere in the winter. especially at high tide, which is when I usually fish the wappoo area. but i would say the next two months will be the slowest fishing all year. I’ve had some luck in coburg creek, but the bigger fish are definitely in the river and the mouths of the feeder creeks. I stay away from the cut unless i making the ‘coburg loop’.
Thanks for the encouragement. I will keep soaking my lines hoping that the fish wake up in the spring.
The cowburg loop is a nice route, but I always have the current going against me. Have you ever figured out how this works?

nope, its real tricky. the tide will always be against you half of the way in the creek, since there are two entrances. just make sure its not against you in the cut! try to get close to a slack tide.
check this post I made:

Me and two buddies of mine actually paddled against the current on the bottleneck on the stono side of the cut. It was insane and we all needed a good break after that. We ended up going to the containment walls that line the bottleneck and using our hands to pull our kayaks against the strong current. It was darn near white water at points.
