Fishing upstate for the first time

Hey All,

I am planning on fishing upstate (north of Greenville, Jones Gap State park area) for the first time the third week of July. It will be the first time that I have fished small streams on the east coast. Most of my fly fishing experience is from float tube fishing small mountain lakes out west and large rivers up in Alaska. Does anyone here have any experiences fishing upstate (Jones Gap area) that they can share with me, I am not looking for favorite holes just general tips like what flies work best that time of year, dry’s, nymphing, dry droppers etc… do I need waders or can I get away with just wadding shoes and shorts? I also intend to use a 9ft 5WT set up, is this too much for that area? Again any information shared would be greatly appreciated.

Tight lines,

Mike

I fish the Chattooga about 30 miles west of Jones Gap. We have switched from trout fishing to red eye bass and red breast in the river. Water temps are getting to high for most trout to survive catch and release. Definitely wet wadding is the way to go. Terrestrials and streamers is the summer flies for the most part. Are you familiar with folly beach area for red fishing?

Thanks for the ■■■■■■■■, I appreciate it. I was concerned about water temps and stressing out a caught fish but did not know if the water stays cold enough up there during the hotter summer months. I have not fished the folly beach area for reds yet, I have mostly fished the wando and cooper river areas as well as the flats surrounding copahee sound.

Fished the middle Saluda in Jones Gap yesterday, water temp was 64… beautiful trail and river, started with a mayfly pattern but noticed some rising fish so switched to a #18 white parachute Adams and was rewarded with a pair “bows” both released safely to swim another day
