We are planning our fishing vacation for next summer - tired of the drive to the Keys. Anyone have recommendations for a week long vacation spot - house with pool/dock privileges within 2-3 hours of Charleston? Thanks!
Down in the Keys right now and yep, the drive blows but, once you are down who cares. This year we left a day earlier than we usually do and are leaving a day later, giving us a full 8 days . The opportunity to catch fish here that I would never see in SC, crystal clear water and just being here make the drive worth it to me. VRBO is a great site to find rentals, try Homeaway as well. Both list places from luxury mansions to shacks.
Not sure what kind of fishing you want to do but have you considered the west coast of Florida? We have stayed in the Weeki Wachee area a few times and really like it. You can go scalloping out of there or several other areas and that is great fun with tasty dividends.

Santee. Get a guide and do the upper part of Lake Marion for LM Bass or crappie. If you want salt water, Georgetown ain’t bad and there’s some freshwater there nearby (Black River and Ashepoo).

Why didn’t you tell me you were leaving a day early? I had everything packed & ready to go. Was just waiting for you to call. You’re not making any points with me Doug. First you doubt my 6" on my TM handle, & now you leave without me.
Have a great time, catch lots of fish, and take plenty of pictures. As you know, without pictures, it didn’t happen.

Edisto is very nice. Quiet little island with not much else but houses and the beach and plenty of good fishing inshore and offshore.

Go to the big bend area of Florida. Beautiful water, and a ton of different species.
Sorry Bob, I tried to call…maybe I have the wrong #. Caught a few yellowtails and mangrove snapper, had my first ever Cero Mackeral alongside and didn’t wait for the net I was so excited. I think you know what happens when Mackeral teeth meet flourocarbon leader. Man was I bummed.

This is a little further than 3 hours, but take a look at the N.C. Crystal coast area around Emerald Isle, N.C.
I was there for a few days for a wedding. Looks like a “fishy” place to me …
Tampa Bay is nice! I’d never pass up the opportunity to fish my own boat in the keys. Although Indian River/Banana River in FL, between Canaveral and Sebastian Inlet is a fun area. Sebastion Inlet is cool

quote:Sebastian Inlet can be treacherous. Its a very narrow inlet and the tide can scream through there, incoming & outgoing. Other than that, good fishing, surfing, nice beach. I haven't been there for several yrs., but it was fun to jump off of the catwalk on the incoming tide, but keep an eye out for sharks. We saw a big tiger in there one time. I jumped off the bridge once, many, many yrs. ago. Wouldn't do it again.

Thanks for the comments everyone - we have decided on St Simons Island - golf had some input into our decision. Certainly appreciate your comments though
quote:A cero mackerel? Sweet. My Grandfather served on the USS CERO submarine in WW2. They were badly damaged and stuck on the bottom. A lot of them figured they were going to die and were passing out due to lack of oxygen. Grandfather was an electrician and his team managed to get power restored enough to surface. They were towed back to Pearl Harbor. I was so close to not existing. Congrats on the Cero Mackerel.

Thanks, but I didn’t actually land it. Touched the leader, but so did the mackeral’s teeth. Oh well, there is always next year.

San Juan/Isle Verde Puerto Rico. Excellent Tarpon fishing. No sharks and only a mile run offshore. You can tarpon in the morning and marlin in the afternoon.

Those Ceros are great eating. Leave the skin on and grill them skin side down
Yuk. I don’t eat mackerel unless it looks just like a Wahoo:smiley: Hawks Channel between the Keys and the outer reef have a lot of Ceros. If you see birds in there, it’s probably Cero
