Five Star Sunday

This past Sunday was a predicted five-star day on the Sunlunar predictor and was rated as “Best”. Well, the fishing did not disappoint as we caught fish all day and brought home our limit of six beautiful reds. The largest was slightly under 23" and the others were 20"- 22" and all were fat. Bait of the day was live shrimp under a float and they were hungry. We went through nearly ten dozen shrimp amd nearly five dozen popcorn mullet during the day. We also boated two big boys (each over 30")off the bottom with larger mullet.

We caught countless juveniles at one point with every cast bringing in a fish. Those small guys put up quite a fight on light gear! Two trout were boated but we released them back to the water as advised by DNR.

We fished the entire outgoing tide and three hours of the incomimg. Water temp was 80- 82 and very clear on the incoming. Some of the fish busted the baits while others would pull the float down and swim around with it before hooking themselves. Also, the bigger fish headed for deep water when hooked which is unusual in our spot.

We had not intended to stay out all day but every time we wanted to leave, BAM, another fish. Weather was great and ride out was smooth and so was the ride back to the hill.

We ate the largest fish Sunday night in a fish stew that the wife has learned to prepare from our trip to Belize in May. The others were given to family and friends.

The reason we had so much bait was I loaded up on it Saturday right out of our creek. It should be a very good shrimping season if my creek is any indicator. Also, the mullet is as thick as I have ever seen it in the waters around my house. Next “Best” day is 9/27 and you can bet I will be on the water. Tight lines and safe journeys, Mike.

Sounds like a great day. I should have fished rather than shrimp.
