Fix Broken Rod ?

I broke off about 1 foot of my rod (in the middle of 2 eyelets) so its a clean break in the rod itself… is there a simple fix for a rod break ?

A good rod builder/repair guy can splice it back together. There would be a small bump where the splice was but action is really not affected. Only one I know of is in the Upstate.

if it can be fixed, the guy upstairs in haddrells mt pleastant can fix it. know that. i broke one like you did years ago. he fixed it, put a dowell in the rod, worked fine, action was definitely affected.

A ferrule can be placed in it, but it will effect the rod’s action and often becomes the next “weak spot” for another breakage…

We fix them with a small section of rod material on the inside of the rod blank and a sleeve of rod material on the outside. THen wrap it like a rod guide and it is good to go.

That last one there sounds like it will work. I know for sure a dowel or anything solid added inside just fubars the action up bad. Will store that thought for later.

I’m pretty well versed in rod building.

Since the break is towards the tip, you will what to repair will a sleeve on the outside of the blank because finding a piece small enough for the inside wouldn’t be strong enough. The sleeve will need to be at least 2" long. Since it is under a guide it will not be as noticeable visually and the action will not be affected as much.

You want to put a sleeve on the inside of the rod blank and the outside. One will not work. Also I never had a problem finding small enough pieces for the inside. But then again I have hundreds of blanks and broken rods for that purpose.

carolinacustom, where you located ? I’ve got a tuna stick i need repaired. broke off about 6-7 inches from tip.
