Fixed Mount VHF Installation

Does the antenna have to be 3 feet from the radio or is it at least 3 feet of cable between the two? I’ve read both and want to do it right the first time.

Thanks.

My Shakespeare antenna installation instructions said to not cut the cable any shorter that 3 ft. Don’t recall any restrictions on radio placement.

The three foot rule for antenna mount away from the radio is because any closer and you will get a squeal (■■■■■■■■) from the antenna thru the radio.

The three foot rule for cable length is because any shorter and you actually loose signal strength from the radio to the antenna.

If you can, mount the antenna as high as you can. Install the radio as far away from anything else metal or electrical. And last, if you have the means, test the radio output (in watts) and signal loss from the radio to the antenna with An SWR meter. If you live close to James Island call me and you can use mine.

One other concern is to not mount the radio to close to your compass. The receiver has a magnet in the speaker that will cause some major deviation. Just a note before you start drilling holes.

My favorite part of the captains class. The thing about your compass readings and changing magnetic to true. True Virgins Make Dull Companions Add Whiskey!!!
