Fixing EPA Approved Gas Cans

If you are like me, you fuel up your boat (and other things) using the occasional “EPA approved” gas can. I was constantly frustrated with the “trigger” you had to pull on the “spill-proof” spout and the fact that it had no vent. I found the below Youtube video that shows how to “fix” these. I did it this morning and it literally took 5 minutes. Now I have a fully functioning, non-frustrating gas can.

Last time I used one of those EPA safety cans, I got gas all over me. Give me a can with a screw cap any day, I’ll take my chances with the vapors.

I’ve got one of those new “EPA approved” 9 gal. fuel tanks for my boat. If the cap is not loose, and I mean loose enough to almost come off, The tank builds up pressure and forces fuel out of the fitting. I had a big frigging mess in my boat the day after I filled it up. I finally got rid of the gas odor. I’ve been trying to figure out a way to put a vent in it.

Happy Bob,

get a vented cap. $25 at west marine. It solved the same problem that I had.

Was yours for the 9 gal. tank? I’ve looked at the West Marine site & the fitment on the one I found doesn’t match my model number.

i have one, but have not used it but one time b/c it got gas all over me. I wondered why someone would come up with such a horrible design, should have figured it was the EPA’s regulation.

I don’t know what the EPA is thinking. I would rather deal with the escaped fumes than with raw fuel everywhere, that could leak into the water, if not caught in time. You (EPA) tell me which is worse.

Good video and new gas can just plan suck. Tractor supply store in Summerville sells these.

Yes they are 12 buck, but much easier than what in in the video and the spout works better.

Did the tire valve mod on two gas cans that have been driving me nuts for years!
Both pour just fine now.:smiley::smiley::smiley::smiley:

Can’t take any credit, stole it from Youtube. It works though.

Bought 5 of those POS cans to drain the fuel tank in my HenryO when I replaced it. Filled the cans. Replaced fuel tank. In order to get the POS cans to flow, you have to place the end of the nozzle on the fuel fill of whatever you’re filling up and push the nozzle so that it compressed toward the can and opens a valve in the nozzle. The vapors were supposed to get sucked back into the can as the liquid came out.

I can guarantee that I spilled enough gas trying to get it out of those (**() cans to completely void the EPA’s attempt to catch gas vapors for the entire USA for a year. All over the side of the boat. All over the ground. All over me (really really safe, huh?).

The knot heads that came up with those regulations are idiots - plain and simple.

These things rock and don’t spill any fuel!

I have 2 that have the “breather” tube in the spout. They SUCK. It takes for ever to empty it. I might try the valve on them.

dfreedom… you the man! Love the video! I could ramble on for pages on the short comings of our EPA. nothing but a government scam on pretty much everything they do.
