I have a question about boat regulations. SC Boating Regulations states that all vessels in coastal waters are required to have flares. How far inland do you have to be before you are not in coastal waters?
Outside of an inlet in you are in Coastal Waters. Flares cost about $12 for 4 of them to have on your boat may as well have them.

Down here is where a signature goes but they can confuse and anger some people so I don’t have one.

Flares are inexpensive and take up very little storage space. I keep’em in the boat regardless if I’m on the lake or in the salt.
In the future, where every stranger poses a potential threat, knowing the predator mindset is the only safe haven.

Dang. I just replaced mine that had expired and paid $24 for four of them at Walmart. Saw some on the rack that were already expired so buyer beware.
Where do you get them for $12?
I figured I’d light off the expired ones to get rid of them. Any other suggestions?
West Marine had them on sale a few weeks ago.

Check the expiration date on them before you buy.
Got checked by coast guard last week said if you are over 3miles offshore it’s required to have them on your boat… But like said always good idea to have them anyways never know out there…

Also required in bays where the ocean access is greater than 2 miles across.
So you could get a ticket in Bulls Bay for not having flares on board.
Boat drinks, Waitress I need 2 more boat drinks!
Why would anybody choose not to have flares:question: Just good sense, no matter the law.

Exactly, Larry.
Right on Larry , no excuse , I also keep all expired loads on board just in case, new ones and gun in console , old ones in sealed bag in storage locker ! ! !

Spoke to the Coast Guard Aux at the boat show a few weeks ago and they said that flares are required in the harbor because of the 2 miles wide rule. I wasn’t aware of that, I was under the impression that they were only needed outside the jetties.

You never know when or where you will need one, or 6, and I wouldn’t rely on the CG Auxillary to tell me if I did or not. You should always have flares, and orange smoke, no matter where you are.

Mostly, they don’t have a clue. I wouldn’t use their advice to pump my bilge.

I test fired some that I had that were 1 year out of date. 50% were duds. I was suprised.

If you buy the cheap Walmart flares, you would be surprised how many brand new ones are also duds. They are about as reliable as Chinese fireworks.

Yeah, that’s one of those things where the bargain brand might not be the wisest choice.

They were orion’s. The same brand they sell pretty much everywhere I’ve seen from west marine to walmart. What brand are you guys using? I didn’t even realize there was a choice.
