Any special place to buy the flares 18ft boats and longer have to have? Is west marine the only choice?
Wal mart has them. Don’t think it’s just for boats 18 and bigger though.

Got mine at Walmart b/c they’re (day & night flares) required when I go to Florida w/ the boat. I don’t remember the regs but they’re not required on my boat in SC. I have a 17 foot flats boat w/ 70 hp Yamaha.
Are you sure they are not required for a 17’ boat? Probably a good idea to have them regardless, but just make sure. The way I read it, I had them for my 17’ boat. But I have been known to interpret things the wrong way!

Straight from SCDNR website:
Equipment
Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) - All boats must have a U.S. Coast Guard approved wearable type PFD for each person on board or being towed. Each PFD must be in good condition, readily available and the proper size for the intended wearer. In addition, boats 16 feet in length or longer must carry a Type IV throwable device. In South Carolina, any person under twelve years of age must wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved Type I, II, III, or V PFD when on board a class ?A? (less than 16 ft. long) boat.
Fire Extinguisher - One Coast Guard approved hand-held portable fire extinguisher must be aboard each boat less than 26 ft. if the boat is carrying passengers for hire or if the construction permits the entrapment of flammable vapors or if it has a permanently installed gas tank, including gas tanks that use any type of fastener that would hamper the immediate removal of the tank from the boat. Additional extinguishers are required in boats larger than 26 ft. Contact SCDNR for complete regulations.
Navigation Lights must be on between official sunset and sunrise.
Flares are required for vessels in coastal waters.
Bells, Whistle - All boats less than 39.4 feet must carry an efficient sound producing device. Every vessel from 39.4 to 65.6 feet must carry a whistle and a bell.

Why would anyone choose to not carry flares, required or not:question:

Not much help on what size boat this applies too- a kayak?
a 10 ft jon boat?
Also don’t forget they have a expiration date. When I buy I go thru them at the store & pick out the pack that has the longest life left on them. Some times it is on the bag & if not you should be able to look thru the plastic to see the date on the flare. I gte mine at Wal-mart too.
By the way, you will get fined if they are out of date.
You can keep expired flares on the boat, just better have some good ones. If you get inspected they will ask: 'So which ones are you going to use first?
Just remember the regulations are for the minimum!

What do they consider “Coastal Waters”?
Key West 19’6" CC 115hp Merc

Anything on the coast. And any “bay” that the mouth opening to the ocean is wider than 2 miles.
So if you are in the jetties, bulls bay, St Helena, or anywhere on the coast, you better have either flares, or a signal flag during the day, and if you are at night, better have night flares, or an electronic signal light. Flares are not the only approved distress signal.

So, the Charleston Harbor is not considered Coastal waters, or is it?

no, in the Charleston harbor, flares are not required
the opening to the ocean must be greater than 2 miles to require flares
I have some stowed away in my kayak, when I go off the beach or to the jetties to fish, but I don’t think the CG requires manually-powered vessels to have them - doesn’t hurt to be prepared.
I guess I’m wrong. I keep them in the boat anyway but I thought that they weren’t required.

It is what it is!
Yes, you can have expired flares in the boat. They can “NOT” be in the same box with new flares or flare gun.
Thanks for the advice. I had both sets of flares in my dry box. Will move them asap,
