flat ocean....no adult fish!

I made the wrong choice yesterday (someone had a gut feeling on running south) got out of the rocks, and the ocean was pond slick. we ran to Edisto bank at 40 mph. I am so glad that the SAFMC protected all those poor Red Porgies, because now I can’t seem to get away from them. We tried 10 different spots on the ledge, not one grouper! We caught 7,311 red mouth grunts, 6,415 banded rudderfish, and a bunch of B-liners. We also found a nursery area for ARS…caught 9 total (12-18"). I did make a anchor retrieval video…on you tube. Came back in to 100’ and caught our limit of big BSB’s, and cruised home at 40. Woulda, shoulda, coulda…oh well, I’ll get them next time. no pics, only the video.

i have been told by many that during the winter if you can fish north,go north…so far it has always worked for me.

yesterday would have been a north kinda day.

Another nice report, at least you were catching fish . Right.

You would think after we killed them last week on SWB, and seeing 3 commercial boats up there, I would have known better. yesterday was a perfect “deep” day, could have run to the snowie and tile spots with ease.

thought about you all day as i worked around the shop looking at the sky. all the snapper and grouper we caught last week were caught north of the outcrop. 21 miles north of were we normally bottom fish. at least you got to go, Ill be calling as I could not get anyone to go again today, like they would melt or something.

If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.

hey sells…yopu forgot to call me to come get my fish:wink:

You are right…one of the best investments you can make for a boat…that and a towing package!!! Well worht the cost!

We keep a short piece of pipe in our boat (wrapped in duct tape so it doesnt bang around) for bennding the mighty mite back into shape…

Hey paul…is it safe to hold on to the rope like that as you set it for retrieval?? Not being a smarta@@ but seems if it snapped or jerked hard it could hurt the person holding it…I’ll just have donnie hold it then…just in case:wink:

Thanks for the video …wish I’d been out there fishing:frowning_face:

All the pressure is still on the front cleat. He is holding the rope to tell when the hook pulls free from the bottom. NEVER cleat the rope off to a stern cleat, as if the hook does not come free, it would pull you backwards…not a good thing in chop or a swell. I don’t worry about the rope snapping, 1/2" nylon would pull out the cleat before breaking. If it does not pull free, turn back into the hook, and try again.

yeah we do the same as for front cleat but saw a rope that had been “sawed” on the bottom snap once when the line was tightening on a boat nearby…and also saw a cleat snap loose one time too…so I am always extra careful I guess…just didnt want someone not familiar with how to use it get hurt and come back at you saying…wha-wha, wha-wha…but sells told me to…you know the deal…

and you are right about the stern cleats…have seen people pretty much submerge their sterns doing crap like that!!!

saw my dad yesterday…said to tell you hello…

Sells,

It could always be worse so , I guess we should think of it that way. At lease you were hooking some fish. Good job. You know it never fails when you have calm seas the fishing isn’t good but when it rougher than hell the fish always seem to bite.

I’ve never bottom fished in Charleston. I don’t how how to even rig up for it, what bait to use and couldn’t identify more that 2 or 3 of the bottom fish fish that are caught in the area. But, looking back at the weather on that day, I believe I would have headed north. Anyway…

Seriously, Thanks for being so willing to share. I just posted a question about anchoring a few weeks ago about anchoring (I believe you even replied)and your video is excellent. Hopefully someday I’ll get to the point where I too will have something to post other than questions.
