Flats by Car

any tips on inshore fly fishing places that I can walk to. any help would be appreciated. do not worry,if you tell me a spot the likelihood of me actually catching a fish are slim to none!

thanks

Try the flats off Harborview. Another good one but a rather long drive is the flat by Cherry Point Landing on Wadmalaw. Your best bet though is around Harborview especially out in front of the Charleston Country Club. Generally you need a tide higher than six feet but this NE wind has made these weaker 5.5 and 5.6’s much higher. There was plenty of water on those flats this morning when I flew over them.

Flew over them?

thanks for the tip. may check it out this week. if you fly over, will be the guy stuck in the mud with fly line tangled all to hell!

Try the flat on the south side of akdhkj…wdkj…
(&)%^%& JHGK %^ Just take a right on Lo!@#$%^& Road and *%^(&%#$%

I (&)( think there is static on my comput*&

Any way this place never fails.

Call me for details

I was up on Tuesday morning checking flats. I got my pilots license a few years ago and found that flying provides an excellent means for scouting.

There are good maps for the flats at Hadrells, Go talk with them they’ll set ya up. Drive around down by Folly there are plenty of spots. The key is to look for the shorter grass this is usually firm ground that you can walk on. Tall grass stay away from, the ground is usualy soft and will suck you up. I know I made the mistake when I first moved here. Took me an hour to get out, eaten alive by every bug on the bay and I stunk to high hell. Not the learning curve I wanted, but one I will not forget. Oh, its not that I’m worried about you catching the fish its that your on my flat.just kidding

got my new fly line, fresh flies, new waders. Headed out yesterday to a spot a buddy of mine and I found. Closed rod in car door and broke the tip off. Did scope out spot - saw 6 tailers! Just couldn’t cast to them!

How much did you break off?

I used a broken rod almost all summer… and caught my first red on the fly on it. It was missing about 10".

Oh man Vinny, that must have been tough to handle. I would have went nuts watching them tail with a broken rod in my hand. Does the rod maker have a full warrenty? You should be able to get that fixed at no charge.

Josh at Chas. Angler took care of it. Yep, under warranty. Now I have a spot and have to wait 3 weeks before I can go back.

How many flying hours have you built up to?
That is a cool way to scout.

I have about 150 right now. It is a great way to scout. Can’t really see fish obviously but it’s a great way to find new flats.

Hey Vinny1, if you’re looking for someone to wade some of those flats with, let me know. My fly rod has been collecting dust.

Flats wading will pick up again in march.

vinny-- were in the same boat…figurativly. I’m getting some flyfishing gear for christmas and have been trying to figure out where I am going to fish. So any help you have would be great. Also, what kind of waders did you get? I’m going to need a pair for here and back up at USC. I’m just starting out fishing for reds/trout on the flats and any help is always appreciated.

travelinJ–i’ll be ready to go after dec 25. and after lots of practice with the new fly rod.

Thanks guys, and anyone whos got advice or would like to go out on the flats let me know

Thanks in advance to everyone for your help or advice! Allen

I’ll chime in on practice. A casting class is worth it’s expense many times over, but only if you practice.
You can become proficient without instruction, but it’s easy to build bad habits. So if I were just starting I’d take a class before i spent much time with the rod in my hand.

Don’t get hung up on distance, but do spend your time working on accuracy and a light presentation. you can practice for hours on grass. All you need is space, a hula hoop, and / or a large plate and a dummy “fly”- just a beat up fly with the curve and point of the hook cut away, or a 2 inch long piece of yarn…

Start at about 20 feet and cast to the hula hoop. you want to be able to land the “fly” in the hula hoop >90% of the time before you go smaller or increase distance.
As you get more proficient, set up several targets in various places and various distances. You want to be able to pick up from one, make one or two false casts, then set the fly down on another target… in about 5 seconds.

So much water, So little time

USCinshore, I’d love to get out and cast at some fish with ya. I figure the more the merrier when we’re learning. Anyway, I posted this in another thread but I spent the weekend practicing my casting in the ocean at hilton head. Had my girlfriend take a few pictures so I could see what I looked like. It helped quite alot. Let me know if you’d like to practice casting one weekend. I’m sure we can find a park or something with plenty of space. I’ll even spring for the Hula-Hoop.

travelinj, thanks man sounds like a deal. the guys on here have really convinced me to get a flyrod and i cant wait. im probably going to try and find a used kayak as well. where ya from. my email is ForrestC@mailbox.sc.edu . im sure im going to be doing a lot of practicing and a practice partner with experience sure would help.

Go Cocks

TravelinJack and USCinshore - I’d be more than happy to get in on the practice sessions, too. I went out in the boat yesterday to get the feel of casting it on the water, and I need LOTS of practice. Just let me know when and where.
