Flats Fishing in the Wind

Not today, it was a little better today for a ride through the harbor to scbg for fathers day brunch. On Friday, i braved the wind for a quick trip with a buddy who had never caught a red before. Picked him up at the Daniel Island dock with white caps on the Wando from the 15-20 from the NE. Made a dash across to Rathall Creek and fished an area of the flat at the end that always holds fish on a high tide. We were about an hour before the high in the afternoon. The flat was choppy with no signs of bait or reds. Fished live shrimp on the bottom at the low tide edge of the flat near some oyster bars. Got two slot reds and two big stingrays in about 45 minutes. Not bad for the conditions. As we were fishing a deer flushed from a small island followed by three guys with fly rods also braving the wind. They made a long walk to another section of the flat. It had to be almost impossible to fly fish in those conditions!

I was out saturday morning trying to throw some artificial in the flats. Wind was definitely hard to deal with. Caught a few big mullet and moved up in the creeks to fish some docks and get out of the wind. Managed 4 reds and 1 break off. Biggest being around 25inches.
