Flats fishing

So my little cousin in coming in town and he wants to catch some flood tide reds, he wants to use a spinning rod tho, what lures should he use for the flats fishing for reds?

Have baits to cover the entire water column (top, middle, bottom). I like to start on top during low light conditions and then let the fish’s level of activity dictate where I go from there. You can have an idea of what you want to throw but the fish will dictate what you actually catch them on. Also, pay attention to the available bait in the area you’re fishing and “match the hatch,” so to speak.

For people throwing artificials, the spinning rod is probably the most widely used rod/reel setup.

If you are going to be walking a grass flat, you are going to want a weedless hook. I recommend a 4/0 weighted flutter hook with a Zman Shrimp.

Gulp crabs or shrimp are good choices on either a flutter hook or circle hook rigged “weedless”

I like the Savage Gear TPE crabs and gulp shrimp for artificials. Also, quartered blue crab on a little circle hook.

All good info. Topwater bite has been solid. Checkout the Savage TPE Mud Minnow. Very weedless. You can fish it like a fluke or deadstick it.

i think i misunderstood the post.

when i think of floodtide flats, it’s shallow wading flats with 18" or less of ‘water column’

i cover it with a johnsons silver minnow or weedless soft plastic.

Still a top, middle, and bottom.

Zman jerk shad on weedless hook, no weight if you’re in the grass flats. Had good luck with white, silver, blue colors. Don’t forget to set the hook if you’re weedless!
