Flats Report 4

Well…
Saturday 9-10 I walked the flats and saw ZERO Redfish.

Monday 9-12 I walked the flats and saw some fish and even spooked a Red.

Today however was a different story. A buddy and I walked the flats and we had a double header. My buddy hooked up and I hooked up right behind him. We both had fish on at the same time. We both landed our fish and mine was a 24".
After the tide went out, we turned to spinning rods and fly rods. After finding a nice size pod of Reds, I ended up catching 5 and the largest being 29" on the spinning rod.

I tried my luck on the fly and I had one break my fly off and another BROKE the hook off of another fly. Then it got real windy and the water got choppy. That was the end of my attempts on the fly.

I’m going back to the flats tomorrow (by myself)…

I walked Monday for the later high. Didnt see one fish. Going out in the morning maybe I’ll have better luck. What flies did u use bass

Funny you should ask that question. I initially started using a modified crab type pattern that I tied, but couldn’t get it to sink in the grass so I switched to a chartreuse/red/copper spoon that I bought in Louisiana. Yesterday was the first time I used it and on the first cast I landed the 24". Later on in the day, I was using that same spoon fishing from my boat and I hooked into a fish and the fish broke the hook off at the base of the spoon. It was a nice fight right up to the point where he broke the hook. I wan’t very happy.

Those La. guys bend the hook prior to making spoonfly (gives better action), hook was likely weakened in process…
Bummer.

Well what hook is out there for spoon flys that you don’t have to bend to make a spoon fly…? I have to bend the hook to make my spoon flys as well…

There arent any that I know of. I avoid bending any hooks.
Spoonflies work wonderfully, but they are more trouble than they are worth in my humble opinion: spoons dont track straight as leader turns over, never know if they are gonna land softly, tend to twist leader up, and I hate that helicoptering noise they make in air…
Not saying they shouldnt be used, just have found toads, merkins and kwan type flies to be just as effective for me, w/o all the issues.
