Well my boss told me to go home early today specifically to go fishing, so I did. I got out on the flat and wadded out bout 1530. Right about 1900, I was walking off having not seen the first sign of any reds, when I looked back over my shoulder and decided since I still had plenty of day light left that I would walk over to an area of this one particular flat that I have never fished before.
The tails just started popping up every where. I chased this one red for over a 100 yds and never caught him. Then… I saw one pushing and I hooked him. He took off and broke me off so I tied another fly on and immediately hooked another. This one took off so fast he back lashed my reel and ended up putting a knot inside the reel which prevented me from reeling the fish in. So I lined my 30" Red in. I let him go and I immediately hooked another. I almost had him in and he bent the hook and got off. Yes I said he bent the hook…! It’s a really good feeling to catch reds and an even better feeling to catch reds on flys that you tied…! I learned a lot out there today by myself and I had a blast.
Tonight’s Redfish is the biggest Redfish I’ve caught on the fly. The only thing that would have made it better is if my 13yo daughter (who also fly fishes and is pretty good) would have been there and my buddy John. John is a fantastic Angler especially when it comes to fly fishing…! That guy can catch Redfish in almost any weather conditions, not to mention he is an excellent fly tyer…! Thanks John for teaching me…! No pics of my fish. Ok, I’m done…
