Flood tide?

Looking for some help ladies/gents: thanks in advance

I have recently moved back to the charleston area for good now…after 8 years of service in the Army…proudly representing the 101st. 4 of those years were over seas in Iraq/Afghanistan. After graduating high school I waited a year before joining up. In that short year I became absolutely infatuated with red fishing the Lowcountry creeks and rivers. In that year, the most memorable times I had were catching reds on the spartina flats with my fly rod. I probably easily fished over 200 days that year!!! I was introduced to inshore saltwater fishing my senior year by a buddy of mine that i played ball with. I moved to the Lowcountry my senior year and being from Gaffney, SC, I had never before caught a saltwater fish

Please forgive my ignorance and lack of knowledge but what is the general consensus on what is considered a “flood tide” by means of:

  • tide height

I understand that not all flats are created equal and what may work for one area may not work for another. I almost exclusively fished the Wando with very few trips out towards Awendaw/McC area. I would like to get the Wando back down pact before I throw another ripple into my learning curve. Its been a very long time but I have been studying the aerials and trying to read up on every tad bit of info I can find.

It just feels good to be back stateside and back in god’s country!! I love the Lowcountry and feel good to call it my new home!! Never really know how quick things can be taken from you until they’re gone. I plan on enjoying every single second I can on the water because you never know!! Thanks guys.

If you don’t feel comfortable replying. Please feel free to PM me!!

Somebody else will have to answer your questions because I’m not totally knowledgeable on them. However, just wanted to say thank you for your service! God bless.

flood tide=high tide.

Typically full or new moon tides that push over 6’

thank you for your service.

PM me and I’ll be glad to help you out on the higher water fishing.

Ace take him up on that! He’s a pro and a helluva lo of fun. You’ll learn stuff and laugh a lot

a flood tide is like what SretchArmStrong said every full moon the tide is higher than usual so the week around there means higher tides witch means you can get access to flats that rarley have water or no water at all on them which means harder bottoms and better fishing areas PM me for any questions on anything about this fishing grass flats is by far my most favorite type of fishing there is

There are lots of pockets and flats that flood as shallow as a 5.1 tide and hold plenty of fish. If you only fish when the tide is at 6 or more you are missing out on alot of good time. Spend a day driving around at a regular high tide and look for flooded pockets in the grass on the main river and back in creeks, then come back and fish those spots. Two of my best spots get too much water once they hit about 5.8. Get a tide log and live by it, carefully keep track the height of the tide on each flat when you find fish and log it in your notes, with a little time you can have multiple places to sight fish on most any high tide. Find the flats that flood shallower then 6.0 and fish them and you will be rewarded by not having to deal with multiple boats on every flat in the river that just grass fish on a 6.0 or better. Best advise I can give is to take Mr. Fuss (Stretch) up on his offer. Hope this helps ya out some.

Thanks guys for all the info. I fished Sunday on the incoming tide. Caught several trout, 1 flounder and one red that was just under the slot at 14.5"!!! It was only my 2nd on the water since moving back several weeks ago. (**(), it just feels good to hit the water!!! I used everything …live shrimp, dead shrimp, live/dead mullet, and mud minnows. Did not try crab but should have!!

Will the tides on the 16, 17, 18 be good?

Isn’t there some sort of “super moon” coming very soon this month? Will that be concidered a good flood tide?

“Fish On”

also pay attention to persistent winds. a solid SW will push more water up the harbor and make for higher water in the grass (albeit tougher fishing conditions). otherwise if you arent in a shallow boat then 5.8-6.0ft is a pretty good rule of thumb. i prefer ones closer to dark. also i dont really like tides higher than 6.2-6.4 because the water comes up so fast and gets too deep to track the fish.
