whats the reasoning behind idea that more tailing occurs during flood tides? fish tend to only get super skinny when they can get to crabs they otherwise don’t have a chance at? I’ve looked many times on tailable flats during 4.5-6 ft tides, but i have only seen tails over 6.5s. maybe just a coincidence.
Every flat you find will have an optimum tide level for tailers… It mostly has to do with the fish’s comfort. They can, and will get really shallow at times… like, Eyeballs out of the water, shallow. But most of the time, they are only gonna come up and feed on those flats when there is enough water that they feel comfortable and safe on the flat.
So some flats I fish only need a 5.8 - 6.0… and will blow out (have too much water) on anything over a 6.2… other flats won’t fish well until I get at least 6.2-6.5…
So in short here is what you have to do… Fish… Alot… and while you’re out there, make a note of when (tide wise) you see fish on the particular flats you’ve found… Then over time you have a list of flats, and you’ll know what level of water you need on each one, so that when you see a tide set coming up, you can look at the water levels, and you’ll know which flats are most likely to fish, and which ones you would be wasting your time on…
Hope that helps… there is no magic bullet or secret… just alot of time on the water

thanks for your insight. wasn’t convinced that i should only look at flooded flats on super high tides. I’ve got a tide log i record in every time i stalk a flat.

What part didn’t you get… the “fish… alot” part? I feel like that’s self explainatory… as in, you should spend alot of time on the water in order to better understand the way in which different tide levels work on different flats… in short… Fish… alot…
Now if you’re d

Mike,
I catch more fish because you contribute here.
Thanks.
And, I like a lot of the clothes you used to sell. I guess that’s a bad thing?
And, since you got out of selling clothes, I wear less beer.

haha…
I highly doubt you catch more fish because of anything i ever posted on the interwebs…
It’s always cracked me up that guys used to bash me and the shop for selling “all those clothes”… Meanwhile all of the ones bashing are wearing their simms shirts, patagonia hats/shorts/shirts…buffs, columbia sun shirts… you know, the stuff we sold… I guess it’s fine to wear, but a sin for a tackle shop to sell?? I don’t know I guess you’ll have to ask them…
As for the cracks on me… well, I just find them funny… let em’ talk, it really doesn’t hurt my feelings what strangers think about what they think they know about me…
As for wearing beer… well, you should always be on guard when drunk mike is around… especially if he has a beer in his hands…
