Florida in January

Hey all,
I might be trying to make a trip down to south Florida this January for some fishing. I’ll be driving down and probably bringing a kayak. Anyone have any knowledge that can help me out? What’s biting, where to go, what to throw?

I’m definitely gonna do some shark fishing while I’m there but tarpon, snook, snapper, and whatever sound fun too. I don’t have money for a charter so it’s all DIY

Thanks

Are you going to any particular part of South FL. East or west coast?

http://www.cyberangler.com/fishing-reports/florida/naples/ take a look on here for west coast. Capt. Todd Geroy posts a lot of really good info you can do back and read his January reports from last year and get a good idea of what is going on. I have know him for a long time and he is a hell of a fisherman. You can always pitch bits of shrimp on a jig head at the mangroves and catch snapper. The pilchards they talk about are 2-5 miles off shore, they run out in the a.m. chum them up with cat food and cast net them. You do see them occasionally inshore but they are normally smaller. Look up goliath grouper they can be caught inshore the smaller ones would be fun to catch in a yack.

I don’t really have a particular spot in mind. How far south do I need to go to escape the winter?

If you want to go off the grid check out Everglades City. Smack dab in the middle of nowhere, great fishing and colorful people. Place called the Rod and Gun club they had at one point an amazing fried grouper sandwich but I haven’t been there in years. I also feel like the have rooms or cottages for rent. Worth looking up fore sure.

check out the mosquito lagoon, awesome kayak fishing

johnathan dickerson state park outside of jupiter is nice. it’s on the Lockahatchee River, and it has a landing inside the park. tarpon, jacks, snook, reds… look it up. they have cabins for rent, you’ll probably need a resevation. in Jupiter, there’s Burt Renolds Boat Landing close to inlet.

been to Everglades City too. it’s a long haul to nowhere. i had the stone crabs claws. cool place. so was Flamingo State park if you’re down that far.

january is prime time down there.

Grew up eating stone crabs out of everglades city and by far Charleston stone crabs are better sweeter meat. Don’t tell anyone down there that they will run you off with a pitch fork.
