I have a trip planned for Thursday - Monday of this week and weekend and my partner is likely going to leave me hanging with 3 days to find a replacement. I have the absolute best guides in the keys scheduled and do not want to cancel with this short of notice. Is anyone out there able to take off on short notice and afford to split costs of guides, gas? This will be flats sight fishing for tarpon and bonefish likely.

It’s a bit early for the poons unless you plan to fish for laid up fish in the bays and back country and the bonefishing is going to be totaly weather dependent this time of year, if a bad cold front drops down on ya it’s going to be bad new for your skinny water ventures on the flip side if the wind cooperates the permit fishing should be pretty awesome the further south you go. You may also want to check out the near shore recks to see if the Cobia are doing the thing, if their on, it’s an awesome bit just make sure you throw your Tarpon rod at them oppose to your bone fish rod. If you get the chance try to check out the night time dock snook bit.
Thanks for the newsflash. I realize all this. We did 3 for 4 on Tarpon in the lakes on thursday. Granted you are right, the full swing oceanside migration has not begun, but I would rather fish tarpon in the park than anywhere else in the world. If you can see them they will eat. A cold front did come through and forced us to red and snook fish the rest of the time. Its all a crapshoot this early. All will be right for my next trip in April.

Allen Let me know about april!
Thanks for the update, sorry to hear about the cold front but I guess that’s fishin!
What size were the poons?
60-110. Laid up, rolling and chaining fish in the basins and lakes. The hauled ass with that front but I am told they are showing back up today and should be back in the swing in a day or two. As soon as the wind turns to a southerly direction they start to come back. Sure wish I was down there all this week. But all of the guides that I fish with are fishing the March Merkin Permit tourney. You pay your money and take your chances this time of year.
J: Goin with Pops in April, but I think we might could do something later on in the summer or early fall if I have any vacation days or change jobs or something.
I also wanted to reccomend Capt. Paul Tejera, of my guides who books weeklong clients every year, but often has days in between and doesn’t market at all. Look at how many tournaments he has won on his resume. He is full service. We went out the night before since I was by myself and he even took me kite-boarding with his friends since we couldn’t really fish on saturday and we ate dinner before I left. Word of advice though, if any decent lookin ladies are around, forget about your own chances.

He also makes a heck of a Jig! 4 10 on the crap shoot with the weather, big blows and cold fronts seem to follow me like a bad mothern inlaw any time I try to head to the coast for a few days of R & R, if you’re lucky enought to catch the front end of a big blow you can really knock’em dead for a couple of days, however if your hit the back side of the front you’re pretty much SOL…hopefully your April trip has some better weather. By then the Permit fishing should be off the charts even though the wind could still be an issue, fortunately it seems to make the Permit fishing better. The other upside is that the really hard colds fronts that can really screw you over bad this time of year should not be much of a factor by then. What did you guys throw at the Tarpon?
I am heading down a week from today, hopefully your right about the fish showing up. From what I ve been told, the tarpon on the full moon at night is off the hook. CH, thanks for the guide advice, but being so last minute, had to book elsewhere. Will let you know how it turns out.
