I am rigging my boat up for flounder gigging for the upcoming season and I am stuck on what I want to do about lights. Is it best to have the underwater lights or would a flood light be better? I have looked at the hydroglow led lights and the rigid industries d-series and they would be relatively easy to mount. What is yalls input on lights?
It’s personal preference really. I prefer out of water 200 watt halogens on a generator. My set up costs about 40 bucks minus the generator. Other people swear by leds or under water lights. Try different set ups before dropping a couple hundred on fancy lights and see what works best for you.
Generators are great but I don’t like the noise. A calm night on the water is not the same while listening to one of those things. I would go with either two hundred watt lights on a 12 volt deep cycle or the new led outfits.
Hand held Q Beam spotlight works fine for me. For years we used an old pump up Coleman gas lantern. Never had any problem spotting fish with either. I like to keep things simple. To each their own Ain’t no way I’m going to listen to a generator run all night, I go to the river to listen to the river.

Yea I think I am going to stick with some type of lights that are compatible with a 12v battery so I don’t have to fool around with a generator. I have a smaller flats boat which I am planning on rigging up for gigging. So if anyone has any mounting techniques it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I keep the lights as simple as possible. If it’s a good night, minimal wind, good direction, and clear water. You can use candles and stick all you want. However, I prefer 4 shop lights clamped in the front of the boat. 2 shop lights clamped on which ever side we are looking. Powered by Honda. It’s quiet enough for me, but anything is quieter than working in a steel mill. Or keeping four kids in line throughout the day:) The underwater lights wouldn’t work for me. I get too shallow, and would be knocking it loose to much. Good luck. Setting up your own lights is as much fun as looking for the fish.
I use a handheld spotlight rigged to a 12v deep cycle battery. I just search the water with the light in my left hand and hold the gig in my right. Its nothing fancy but it’s cheap, effective and takes up little space when its not in use.

I always used 3-4 pan lights on the side of Jon boat and 2 deep cycle batteries. This was back before CFL’s and LED’s. Might be a little pricey but I would buy the LED bulbs if I were you to save the need for another heavy battery.
I would think underwater lights would eliminate glare but if you’re in the right spot passing a few fish because glare kept you from seeing them won’t ruin the day. Dad and I got 30 a few nights and struck out a few too. Had a blast either way.
