There is not enough money on the planet to keep me here in this place, Easy. We really hate Okinawa. Okinawa was a means to and end. I came straight over here after getting back from Afghanistan with 1st Battalion 8th Marines. In trade, I was able to go to Beaufort after this tour in Okitraz. Some clout and say comes along with doing your time, and it makes bumping those guys who stayed in place for years easier…the old up-to-date oversea control date (ha,ha). Now, I’ll get to see my oldest daughter graduate college (Francis Marion University) and my youngest daughter graduate high school with all the rest of the family in SC. And, due to the operation deployments coming to a crawl, I suspect i will never have tot go overseas again. I know for sure I have 3-4 years in Beaufort, and I only intent on staying 4-6 more years anway. That will put me at 25.5 to 27.5 years. That’s enough. I’m ready to come home for good. I would love to go to New Orleans after Beaufort for my final tour. There would be some trout, redfish, redsnapper, and grouper slaying going on there.

As a civilian working, I loved my time in Okinawa. Diving is incredible and fishing is fantastic! Some incredible history there too. I hope you’ve taken advantage of the great sites there.

23Sailfish,
We have, but as you know, the island is small. After the first year, it all get kind of old. Things at home get old too, but at least it is home. I did not get into the diving or fishing here. I could have, but this month I would not be making the last payment on my Tundra that has only 8000 miles on it either. It is all about the dollar signs. Gonna make a down payment on a L3200DT Kubota tractor at Steen next month too. The tracotr will help me keep up my place in Andrews much better, and I’ll be bale to plant for the deer. I live on Camp Lester, and I work on Camp Schwab…looooong drive every day with crazy drivers on the road and hoorible traffic. But, it is generally safe over here from things we see in the States like shootings at schools, kidnapping, and theft. It is not all bad for us. Just really ready to come home. Thanks.

We did a bunch of work for the USMC evaluating their comms. Went to every radio tower on Oki…Schwab, Foster, Lester, White Beach, Butler, Kinser, you name it. The views were pretty amazing. JWTC was like another world and the pictures I side were an incredible piece of the history of american forces in Okinawa, and some cool stories from the guys there.
We ate at Jack’s on Kadena more than once…
It is small, but you have to admit, that place geographically is a little piece of paradise.

Ha,ha…that’s funny. We ate at Jack’s the other night when my oldest daughter was here for the holidays. That old guy is still at it. We did a 70th anniversary of 4th Marines the other night too. Yeap, there is a lot of history here. Some of us are thinking about getting the money together to go out on a charter here. They do pretty good with dolphin, wahoo, and tuna. The last time we planned a trip, a typhoon came too close to us and made the ocean too angry. It was cancelled due to weather. Maybe I’ll get to it before I leave in a couple of months.

23Sailfish,
Ha,ha…I run straight out the Lester gate to the beach in your pictures and turn left up the hill. Then, I head down the seawall by the big windmill, over the two bridges, and I turn around where the guys in your pics are out on the little culdesac–ironic. That silly farriswheel is still there too in American Villiage. From my house on Lester, it is about 5 miles round trip. I don’t know how long it has been since you were here, but right beside Lester on 58 is now all full of buildings, businesses, and apartments. Hardly any of that stuff was here when I got here in 2011. The other side of the street has not changed much. I’ll try to take some picks this week and send them to you. My ride to Schwab every day is up 58 onto 23 and then onto the expressway. Of course the expressway dumps me out on 329 at exit 9. The expressway is not bad, but both ends from point A to B and the other way around can be the tough part. The last mile is always the worst. Here is a pic at night of the farriswheel from my front door.

BUT, we take it in the shorts too. At the rate we are going, I fell like (notice I wrote “I feel like”) the commercial fisherman is slowly driving the recreational fisherman to either quite or catch and release only.

Not only are you out on a limb, but you are speaking bull****! Blame the commercial fisherman…great move! So tell me, how many PERMITTED commercial fisherman target flounder, and how many pounds did they get last year? There is NO commercial pound nets in SC, only NC! Shrimp boats do get some as bycatch, but the number of commercial flounder fisherman is very small…I am one! Even though I commercially harvest flounder (by gigg) I still buy 99% from wholesalers in NC, and I sell about 200#'s per week. Stop blaming the commercial guy where it is not warranted

So now that ya?ll have kissed and made up, can we get back on topic? Because I am with kiblerws and would like to start trying to gig once it warms up. I have a 14’ jon boat and can get almost anywhere. I have been fishing a lot around Stono area and have started exploring Ashley River round the railroad bridge and I have not found sandy bottom to date. Note: Since I am newer to the area, I have been out a lot at low tide.
Do most of you use LEDs to halogen? AC\DC? 12 or 24V and what would be the minimum lumens (typiclly)? Walk or pole the boat around? I was thinking of getting these http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007ZGBLNW?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&s=hi on 24V? Thoughts? 4 of these would seem pretty simple to setup and hang off the side or the front of the boat.
I would greatly appreciate tagging along with someone once the water warms up. Thanks.
To be honest the more light the better. If you can run halogens with a generator do it. You can pole the boat around or use a trolling motor. We use a 15hp kicker motor to push the boat around. If you can find clear water in the summer on the ashley it can be really good. And you dont always have to find sandy bottom. I like a muddy sandy mix around oyster beds. Pm me if you wwould like some help.
Thanks Poleyard. PM sent.
What really matters with a light configuration is getting something that works for you. I use a 100W 12V bulb and a battery. Some guys use generators. I don’t like the noise of the generator running in the boat with me. Other than that, generators are a viable option, but they are usually more expensive than a battery. Everything has pro’s and con’s for the most part. I use my 100W bulb with a very large industrial shade that is shaped similar to the small silver ones you find in WalMart. Me and Dad have two of them from and old wharehouse from a long time ago. We also have the inside painted white intead of silver. White seems to reflect more light than the silver on the inside. I don’t have a picture of the light, but I will try to make a crud diagram tonight on the iMAC, and I will post it for you.
Some people push the boat (I do), some people use a trolling motor, and some people drift with the tide. It is all a matter of personal preference and what works for you. 14-16 foot flat bottom john boats with a deck on the front are the best flounder gigging boats in my opinion, but other boats can certainly be used. And, I have used them. I find a large portion of my flounder around shell banks, so the aluminum boat can take running into and scrapping against the shell banks (or roacks) better than a fiber glass boat.
The gigs themselves come in many varieties also. I used to use the #8 and #9 B&M gigs with a douglas fur pole. The pole was about 12 feet long or so. Now, I use aluminum handles gigs with stainless steel gigs because they are lighter. Long ago, we could stick the big redfish, and the douglas fur pole would handle them. Now, there is no need for the extra horse power, and the aluminum handled gigs are much lighter to make you less tired. I got mine from Haddrell’s.
You just have to keep at it and gain some experience. It is like most things that baffle us…once you see how to do it, the light bulb goes off, and it is not a mystery anymore.

American Village was funny to me. Lots of stores there like the malls here playing American music. As we were walking around one store they actually had american rap playing with the n word being dropped every ten seconds… I guess if you can’t understand the language, it’s not offensive? We all had a weird “look at each other and nervously laugh” moment. The Japanese teenagers in the store didn’t appear to notice.
It’s been a few years since I’ve been there. My last trip in Japan was during the big quake. Haven’t been back since.

I brought my camera to work today. I’ll send you some pic of Camp Schwab tonight when I get home. It isa bit of dreary day, but cloudy day pic are better than no pics. Camp Schwab is eventually tunring into the new Marine Corps Air Station. Futenma will move up here, and 4th Marines will move to Guam. They are starting to build on Schwab now, and eventually, they are going to build a run way out in the ocean like they did in Iwakuni. It is all about politics and giving some of the land back to the Japanese as the population in the Island continues to expand.

We use a generator and four halogen 500 watt lights. Yes, generator is noisy and the amount of light is probably overkill, but with all the light I can bowfish too.
To each his own, there are some incredibly bright led low current pull lights now. A good battery will last six hours with these type lights

NICE!!! I like dat setup Sellsfish. This is the best pic I have of the light. You can just see the shade on the top of the pic. I mounted it in one of the seat bases so it swivels. I also built in a handle to tighten or loosen so it will stay in place and prevent it from swinging around. It plugs into the boat and the battery is in the back. Since I mostly go by myself or with Dad, it is all I need. One or two of those shop lights could be a good idea for the back of the boat though.

It is a crude picture, but it gives you and idea what it looks like combined with the other picture.
