Thanks Guys. Base on what you guys have suggested, I think MississippiRat and I are going to uses his three 500w halogen setup with generator, simalar to sellsfish. We will have to modify it a little but it should work. I am going to buy one of the LEDs to see how it will work for a furture replacement so we dont HAVE to have the generator or just to have as a light for the interior of the boat.
Sellsfish uses four, I use six…just to be better than him.
Truth be told, he sticks way more than I do with less light!!

Here are a couple of pics of my setup similar to sellsfish. I’ve used the LEDs and I found there wasn’t enough penetration into the water stick with halagens cheaper and much better penetration. I run a Honda eu2000 but you can get a couple of DC batteries and an inverter if you don’t want the gene noise.

While this thread has gone far and wide but someone did ask what the flounder limit is. Well currently it is 20 per persons and 40 per boat except in the Murrells Inlet Pawleys Island area where it has been 10 and 20 since 2009. However effective July 1, 2014 the new limit everywhere in SC will be 15 fish per person and 30 per boat max.
I started with LED strips. They were very quiet (silent qualifies) and drew almost no power. However, they just didn’t seem to penetrate deep and even a small amount of ripples on the water cut visibility by a good bit.
I now use 4 x 500w halogens and a gennie. It is louder for sure, but I put the generator at the back of the boat and it doesn’t bother me at the front. I can easily have a conversation, without raising my voice, with people standing within 3 feet or so. I did go with a Yamaha. It is slightly louder than the Honda, but would support 4x500w lights where the honda only would drive 3. I still have problems, at least according to my wife, but not enough light is no longer one of them.
A couple of other thoughts.
I strongly recommend a trolling motor. You can pole - you can drift, I know. I did that for my first season. However, a trolling motor is very nice. Once you try one it is very hard to go back.
Also, I was concerned that the sound and/or vibration from the generator would spook the fish. In my experience it only happens about 1 time out of 20 - and I think that might have more to do with the guy running the trolling motor (me!). Those flatties trust their camouflage. They will sit right there while you turn around and come back if you miss them the first time.
Lastly, if you do spook one, don’t worry. They usually only go about 20 yds before settling right back down. If they go deep you might have lost them, but often they just move down the bank a short distance.
Always SEMPER FI troops?
Yeah had the same problem with the LEDs. Nice portable setup though.
Found this photo the other day from last summer. Im ready to start going again…almost that time cant wait
Wow I have learned a good amount about flounder gigging…we ALL need to walk away from the little glowing box called a computer and pick up our rods and get out on the water…walk away from the little box that raises blood pressure, hook up the boat and catch a fish…

I heard that they are going to stop “beach walking” also… You know…walking in the water along the sand with a light…anyone else heard this?

Those are the lights I have on my boat.
The last time I went floundering, we were walking with Coleman lanterns with reflectors. Of course, that was about 1970.

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.
So do most of you have lights that shine above the water or submersible lights?
A little bit of both we stand on the front of the boat and it pushes them down under water. Its better if they are submerged.
Mine are above.
Just know that there is no perfect light set up. As long as you have enough light to clearly see the bottom, you’re good to go.
Next time around, I’ll probably try the low power LEDs

Gonna use these big aluminum bowles for fish fillets and shrimp. Every now than then, I find something useful in Okinawa. 49 days to go, and we have tickets.
