Finsport bags are ideal for the streamers and poppers I use for stripers. Compact and hold a lot of flies.

I usually use my Willy Joe Equinox chect pack, it has places for all my tippets, tools, beer and a great fold down shelf for flies… If I am not using that I’ll use an el cheapo CA plastic box and drop a few in there and put it in a pocket. I have taken flies and thrown them in a shirt pocket or stuck them in my hat… I don;t think you realy need a fly box while you are fishin, I do have a nice big boat sized fly box I keep them in and grab what I need out of…

This question rages on every fishing board I read.
I guess you first need to figure out what application you are needing it for. Are you on a boat, in a kayak, or wading? Each application has a “best” for it. In a boat I really like my Cliff’s Bugger Barn. In my kayak I like a smaller one, similar to the Plano box above. If wading then I have to make other arrangments, depending on the size flies I am using.
I have several types and sizes, and the funny thing about that is when I first started fly fishing I bought a small Merrit (i think) foam box and though, “man…I will never be able to fill this thing up with flies.”
Far better it is to dare mighty things to win glorious triumphs even though checkered with failure, than to take ranks with those poor spirits who never enjoy much nor suffer much because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.
My wife bought me one of those C&F waterproof boxes. I love her…

I’ve got some Scitentific Anglers fly box
for small freshwater stuff and one of those plano boxes for saltwater if I’m in a boat. If I’m wading, I’ve got a little Altoids tin to use

You can make your own cliff bugger style box. Go to craft store and by a cheap pencil box and some sheets of hard foam. Cut the foam to fit inside the pencil box (both sides). Take a razor blade and a straigth edge and make straight cuts from top to bottom spaced 1/2 inch apart (or less for smaller flies). The cuts in the foam sandwhich your hook instead of having to jam the barb directly into the foam - preserves life of foam. Buddy showed me this and it works great.
I followed Winyahjay’s advice and made one in 20 minutes and for a cost of $5 bucks at michaels.
I’ve done this too. Then I saw someone, I think on this site, who used old VCR cassette boxes. They are more compact and most folks have a few piled up somewhere in the attic or garage. It’s a great idea. So let’s all go ahead and get fly boxes promoting some movie from the 80’s
I am going to give this Michael’s thing a try…then I will have a boat fly box…all I will be missing is the boat!

The foam you need and the pencil boxes are on the same isle in the Michaels store. FYI-
