Fly Colors

Fished Capt Sam’s Inlet over the weekend using brown or rootbeer colored MM patterns. The water was pretty cloudy but you could see fish in 10" or less water. What colors have yall found that are working right now?

Brown and rootbeer are both good colors… a little flash and a pattern that will push a water well never hurt either.

But remember… 9/10 of the whole deal is presentation… the fly is a very small part of it…

Good luck to you.

Mad Mike nailed it, 90% is presentation and how you manipulate the fly when it is in the fish’s zone…rootbeer always seems to produce.

I agree with MM about root beer and brown. I have tried everything and have come back to favor Carolina critters in root beer and tan for tsilers. They move water and fish like them. Also easy to tie.

I broke a fish off Monday night on a critter and didn’t have another , so I put on a black and orange merkin. Fish ate it immediately, but like MM said it was in the right spot, so presentation is key.

Tie up some critters with root beer chenille and take a shot no longer than you are absolutely sure you can put it on a dime and I am sure your score rate will improve.

Can you or anybody else elaborate on this? I’m still trying for my first Red OTF on the flats, and I am clueless as to what I should be doing with presentation. I have had numerous shots at fish, only to either spook them by moving the fly, or have them swim right on past if I leave the fly motionless. What is the proper technique for manipulating different types of flys in the “zone”? I’m mostly fishing with Mike’s Mud Minnows, or a Crab patterns.
THANKS!

dont move dem crabs…crabs dont jump- use of breathable materials (wrabbits and marabou) will allow the fly to move enough to be spotted.

Thanks for the help guys. Dragonslayer, from the little I know (and I mean little) with MM patterns a slow retrieve is good. Sometimes if it’s right in front of them a little twitch will get them to strike. I’ve learned a lot from reading this forum and others. Check out stories from other guides, forums etc and read up as much as you can about saltwater fly fishing. I got lucky and have a buddy who has SWFF all over the world and fish with him whenever I get the chance. Find someone with some experience to fish with. It’s amazing how much knowledge you can pick up in just a couple of hours!

Watch which way fish is tracking. Wait for head to go down and tail to pop up.

Throw the fly 2-3 feet to the left or right of the fish depending on the track and about a foot passed the projectedvswim path.

When tail goes down ease (and I mean ease son) the fly where it intersects with the red’s nose.

Many times they will spook or will sail right passes the fly, but you have put the fly in the right place.

Sometimes the fish just has to #%}+*=> up a bit.

i like green or black flies the best. the fushes dont mind them too much either
