I am headed down to the abacos in june and of course my main focus is catching some bonefish on the fly. I have kind of done some research and plan on getting a guide for a day or two, but it seems as though there may be so many bones that i can do a lot of it on my own . Just wondering if anyone has been down there and can offer any insight into doing it yourself bone fishing or recommendations for guides. Thanks!
years ago, maybe 2008 or so, I fished out of Sandy Point on the southern tip of Abaco. We stayed at about a 1* hotel but it included meals and our guide. There was a really nice bonefish lodge (don’t recall the name) where we’d go have drinks at the bar but that place was a lot more $$.
Don’t know much about DIY opportunities but if you want to fish the Marls, I believe you’ll definitely need a guide. In addition to helping the local economy, getting a guide will save you a lot of time/frustration. I love finding bones on my own and it’s very rewarding, but depending on how much time I have to fish, a guide is usually well worth the investment.
yes, there are loads of DIY bones. little harbor (where Petes Pub is ) has a good flat on it…you can sprint from the bar. cherokee sound should take up at least some of your google earth research time. stop by the shop if you have time and i’ll fly around the map with ya and point out a few things.
you can also rent a boat and hit some great flats on the south side of green turtle…(caught my only trigger fish here- tailing like a madman- on a pink puff)
Been there several weeks to fish all DIY except one day guided, I can give you some info as well, got my permit (3) there as well as bones but they can be quite difficult in Cherokee sound, hit me up after you talk to scotty and i can give you some info as well.
I rented a boat in marsh harbour, stayed in hope town, and did DIY trips on the flats behind snake cay. Never saw anybody else back there and caught 2 to 3 fish each time just solo wading. Tide doesn’t swing too bad so you don’t have to worry about getting super stuck Charleston style
