fly-fishing from the surf

I’ll be moving to the Charleston area soon but am relatively unfamiliar to fly fishing tactics in the area. I gather that much of the action is flats and marsh for reds (which sounds awesome) However, I was wondering how much is going on with surf casting? Do the stripers make it that far south and close enough to shore to cast to? If not, are there other suitable opportunities from the shore with a fly outfit? What would be a suitable outfit (I have an 9.5ft 8wt)?

Thanks in advance.

I’ve never heard anyone catching stripers down this far but u can catch pompano blues whiting reds flounder. I’m sure your rod is just fine for the beach I saw a guy last yeAr casting next to the iop pier and he only had an 8wt.

that’d be a great rod. lots of fishes from the beach- pompano, trout, reds and blk drum, bonnetheads…and you’ll have it realitively all to yourself. tucker posted some great pics of black drum tailing in the surf recently.
