I’m planning a trip the first week in June to HHI. I’m an avid fly fisher on the TX and LA coast and hope to do the same on vacation. I primarily fish the salt marsh in LA for reds.
I’m not looking for secret spots, just a simple overview of wade or kayaking around the marshes in HHI.
Are the marshes hard bottom and wadeable?
Places to avoid?
We are staying pretty close to the center of town/island on the west side. How far of a walk/drive to marsh fishing?
I will be there for a 9 days and plan on a getting a guide for at least a day or two. Any recomendations on good Fly fishing guides?
Fly guy,
You actually picked a pretty good week to come. The am tides that week will produce some good opportunities for tailers.
Unfortunately the island doesn’t have many public launch areas near the flats that produce. If you plan on going in the kayak you’ll want to leave the dock before sunup and be prepared to paddle your ass off.
Once you get that out of the way you will find that there are tons of wadeable flats around the island, but be careful because there are equally the amount that will eat you up with soft bottom. Look for the pickle weed, it’s shorter than the spartina and usually on harder ground.
When you find hard bottom, definitely get out of the kayak unless you have one you can stand in. A low perspective and tailing redfish don’t mix as you probably know. Where the right shoes too, something that will not come off if you get stuck in mud. Be prepared with lots of water and wear your shade, it’s going to be a long day in June,in the kayak, if you want to get around fish.
Thanks for the help guys. I’ve talked with a few guides that all seem capable and know their way around a fly rod. I’m looking forward to visiting yalls water!
I would agree there are few places to wade on HHI. Pickney Island , National Wildlife Refuge, , right next to HHI, there are many places to wade at high tide. Some you can walk to and others are further inside the island where you can reach by bike ( no cars in Park) Also close to Pickney Island landing where you can kayac up to many small islands around Pickney where there is lots of areas with short grass.
Good luck!
